Italian tire manufacturer Pirelli is poised to step into the spotlight as the exclusive tire supplier for MotoGP starting in 2027. In preparation for this significant role, Pirelli will conduct tests on new tire compounds at the Aragon circuit in Spain.
This crucial testing event will see participation from five major manufacturers within the MotoGP series: Honda, Aprilia, Yamaha, KTM, and Ducati. The testing schedule is set to occur during the summer, following the Aragon Grand Prix on June 8, with an additional MotoGP test day on June 9.
This testing session will be exclusively for test riders from the five participating manufacturers. The main objective of these tests is to collect vital data about the new tire compounds that Pirelli intends to use when they officially enter MotoGP.
Pirelli’s entry into MotoGP comes after Michelin’s decision to withdraw from their tire supply role. Initially, Michelin expressed interest in continuing as a tire supplier beyond 2026.
However, MotoGP chose to move toward a unified tire supply that would encompass all series categories, including the electric MotoE series. This shift indicates a new direction for the championship.
In its quest for success in MotoGP, Pirelli plans to conduct ongoing testing throughout 2026. The company aims to make adjustments based on feedback from teams and riders, enhancing its products accordingly.
While Pirelli will cover all expenses for the initial development tests in 2025, the expectation is that teams will handle costs for 2026’s testing sessions. This has stirred some concerns among participants in the MotoGP paddock.
With this move, Pirelli is expanding its presence in motorsport, joining the ranks of other premier racing series such as Formula 1 and World Superbike, where it currently serves as the tire supplier. Furthermore, since the beginning of the 2024 season, Pirelli has been providing tires for Moto2 and Moto3.
As Pirelli gears up for its upcoming tests, the company remains focused on developing tire offerings that will meet the needs of the MotoGP championship. By refining their products and gathering data ahead of their official entry, Pirelli is laying the groundwork for its future in motorcycle racing.
The anticipation surrounding Pirelli’s debut in MotoGP reflects the manufacturer’s commitment to contributing positively to the sport and its ongoing evolution.
