In the competitive realm of bracket racing, Jared Ledford stands out as a beacon of perseverance and talent. Hailing from Greenville, Michigan, he has earned multiple track titles, culminating in an impressive victory as the IHRA world champion in the Top class at Holly Springs Motorsports Park in 2022.
Yet, his most profound triumph came not on the racetrack but through an arduous six-month journey battling cancer. In September 2024, Jared faced a life-altering diagnosis when tests following a bout of diverticulitis revealed Stage 3C Colon Cancer.
At only 23, he became the youngest patient his doctors had encountered with such an advanced form. The shock of the diagnosis hit hard, especially after celebrating a racing win just days earlier at Mid-Michigan.
“It was just a giant blow to the gut,” Ledford remarked, capturing the emotional turmoil that followed. As he began chemotherapy, Jared’s life outside of racing was put on hold.
His world shifted dramatically from the thrill of competition to the stark reality of hospital visits and managing the exhausting side effects of treatment. During this time, his two-year-old golden retriever, Bentley, became his constant companion.
“He was there for everything… There were days I slept on the bathroom floor, and Bentley slept right next to me,” he shared, illustrating the comfort provided by his furry friend amid hardship. The harsh winter added another layer of difficulty, keeping Jared from racing in warmer environments.
However, a turning point came when veteran bracket racer Bug McCarty offered him a car to compete at a 5-Day event in Immokalee, Florida. Filled with gratitude, Jared felt a spark of hope as he reconnected with the racing community that had supported him through his cancer journey.
Upon arriving in Florida, the change in climate and atmosphere invigorated him. The kindness shown by his friends, particularly Blake Fuqua and Caraline McCarty, who organized fundraisers to cover his medical expenses, showcased the strength of community support.
Their efforts included a t-shirt sale and a race entry giveaway, which raised significant funds. Jared expressed heartfelt appreciation for the support, saying, “I can’t thank everyone enough.” Following 12 rounds of chemotherapy, Jared received encouraging news.
While awaiting a final CT scan in May to confirm his remission, his recent blood tests signaled a clean bill of health. Eager to return to the track, he prepared for the opening points race at Mid-Michigan, ready to embrace the thrill of racing once more.
At just 24 years old, Jared Ledford has navigated significant challenges and emerged with a renewed perspective on life. He has fostered meaningful relationships during this trying time and aims to inspire others facing similar struggles.
His advice to those battling cancer is clear: “Be open about it and don’t be afraid to reach out to people to vent and talk. Life goes on. You just have to get through it the best you can and push yourself to get to the finish line.”
Jared’s journey intertwines the worlds of racing and resilience, presenting a story that resonates far beyond the racetrack. Through his challenges, he embodies the spirit of determination and hope.
He reminds many of the importance of community support in overcoming life’s toughest battles. As he prepares to return to racing, his story continues to inspire, not just within the racing community, but for anyone facing their own hurdles.
