McLaren’s rivals are paying close attention to what they believe are special technical tricks on the papaya-colored cars as the team’s winning run grows at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in Imola. Andrea Stella, who leads McLaren, has rejected claims that clever front wing designs or flexing bodywork have been the main reasons for their speed.
McLaren has dominated Formula 1 for the past year, starting with a major upgrade at the Miami race in 2024. That change turned the team from a middle-of-the-pack regular into one that fights for wins every Sunday.
McLaren won its first constructors’ championship since 1998 last season and has started this year stronger than ever, claiming victory in five of the first six races.
Other teams, including Red Bull, have noticed how fast McLaren pulls away and are searching for answers. Some rivals have suggested McLaren used water-cooling systems for tires, found ways to flex their wings more than anyone else, or even discovered a new solution to stop rear tire wear.
After McLaren’s cars passed all FIA inspections, the governing body announced tighter checks on flexible wings. New rules will arrive later this month at the Spanish Grand Prix and many teams believe the changes might slow McLaren down.
Even so, Stella says the focus should be somewhere else. He pointed out that accusations about wing flexibility have nothing to do with why McLaren is so quick.
Stella said that he is happy when others are distracted by rumors, as it means more time for his group to keep improving their own car.
Max Verstappen from Red Bull, who is a four-time world champion, also wants his team to focus on their work instead of being sidetracked by what McLaren is doing. Verstappen said thinking about outside factors was pointless and the real solution is to fix their own problems.
Red Bull is feeling the pressure as the gap to McLaren continues to grow. Team advisor Helmut Marko has admitted that upcoming changes in the rules at Barcelona might not make much difference.
He said catching McLaren will now be tough, since McLaren has been strong on every track and with all tire compounds.
So far in 2025, McLaren has stayed ahead in the standings and shown speed everywhere. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have both finished strongly, helping the team build a solid lead in the points.
Rivals are hoping the new checks on front wing flexibility may help even up the fight, but McLaren remains confident that their gains are real and not just the result of bending the rules. McLaren’s run of good form has forced other teams to look at their own designs and race strategies.
The season rolls on with Barcelona up next, where the latest front wing tests will begin. Teams are still playing catch-up and hoping to find a way to break McLaren’s winning streak.
For now, the Woking-based squad leads the pack and shows no sign of slowing. All eyes will be on Spain to see if anything changes at the top, or if McLaren’s rivals continue to chase shadows as the battle for the championship heads into the summer.
