Mason Wright picked up his first win of the season in the Congruity NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series at Route 66 Raceway in Chicago on Sunday, May 18, 2025. In the final round, Wright went head-to-head with J.R. Gray and capitalized when Gray left early and was disqualified for a red-light start.

Wright’s Chevrolet Camaro ran a strong 5.734 seconds at 251.25 mph, capping off a weekend where his team showed speed and consistency at every stage. Wright came into this Chicago event leading the field, qualifying No. 1 with a pass of 5.676 seconds at 253.66 mph.

His run through eliminations included wins against Chip King, Mike Stavrinos, and Ken Quartuccio. Each pass in eliminations was in the low 5.70-second range, confirming that his car was dialed in for the tricky track conditions.

The win moves Wright up to fifth place in the season points, a key boost after a tough start to his 2025 campaign. After the race, Wright gave the credit to his crew.

He said he struggled on the starting line but relied on his team’s preparation and skill. “The team carried me the whole way today. They won this race, and this is all for them,” Wright told reporters.

He said every group in Pro Mod is strong and that coming back even better at the next event is always the goal. Chicago’s race is the fourth of ten Pro Mod events this season.

Wright’s victory came at the 25th annual Gerber Collision & Glass Route 66 NHRA Nationals presented by PEAK. The weekend’s event was powered by Flying H Drag Strip in Odessa, Missouri.

This win is Wright’s second career Pro Mod triumph. In a run of recent form, every Pro Mod race this season has been won by the top qualifier, showing just how important the early rounds can be for later success.

J.R. Gray finished runner-up at Chicago, but his performance was still strong enough to move him into the overall points lead after four races. Gray knocked out Derek Menholt, Billy Banaka, and Kevin Rivenbark to reach his second final of the year.

He won last month in Charlotte and now sits just ahead of his teammate Mike Stavrinos in the standings, with Rickie Smith following in third. Gray’s consistent results underline his status as one of the frontrunners in the 2025 Pro Mod season.

The Pro Mod series will resume at the Super Grip NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals, scheduled for June 6-8 at Bristol Dragway in Tennessee. Drivers and teams will look to build on the momentum from Chicago.

As the season heads toward the halfway mark, the competition for the championship is heating up. With half the season still to go and plenty of points available, the chase for the 2025 Congruity Pro Mod title remains wide open.

Wright’s Chicago victory gives his team valuable confidence and shows the importance of both preparation and execution at this level of NHRA competition.
