Fernando Alonso says luck has not been on his side this season, but he believes Aston Martinโ€™s lack of pace is the real issue holding him back.

The two-time Formula 1 world champion came into the Monaco Grand Prix still looking for his first point of the 2025 season.

At the previous race in Imola, Alonso qualified an impressive fifth, offering hope for a breakthrough.

However, an early pit stop quickly unraveled his strategy when a virtual safety car came out, allowing several competitors to pit with less time lost.

A full safety car later in the race helped his rivals again, while Alonso and Lance Stroll had already missed their opportunity due to limited tire options and were unable to respond.

After the race, Alonso called himself the โ€œunluckiest driver in the worldโ€ on team radio.

When questioned before the Monaco weekend about relying on mascots or good luck charms, such as a rabbitโ€™s foot or a four-leaf clover, he shook off the idea.

Alonso explained, โ€œI donโ€™t believe in all those things. Itโ€™s what we deserve, probably.โ€

He said the carโ€™s lack of competitiveness has been the biggest issue, and that when a team is not quick enough, even small problems can keep them from scoring points.

Alonso detailed several races where things did not go his way.

In Australia, he went off in the gravel and could not finish in the points because of his own mistake.

At China, as three cars were disqualified, there was a chance to score, but a fire on the brakes forced early retirement on lap two.

He added that in races where Aston Martin has a chance, something always seems to go wrong.

Through the first seven rounds of the year, both reliability problems and mishaps have kept Alonso and his team out of the points.

The veteran driver was also unhappy that his heated radio message was aired globally.

He stressed that radio conversations are meant for his engineer and team, and frustrations in the car often come in the heat of the moment.

โ€œYou send a message specifically to themโ€ฆit makes no sense without the complete context, but this is normal for Formula 1 communications,โ€ Alonso said.

Looking back, Alonso stated that while these events are frustrating, he does not truly consider himself unlucky.

He pointed out his long list of accomplishments, which includes two Formula 1 world championships, two Le Mans 24 Hours wins, a World Endurance Championship, and a 24 Hours of Daytona win. He remarked that if he is really the unluckiest driver, then the others must have it even worse.

Still, Alonso is searching for answers this season.

His experience and record show that he can win at the highest level.

Fans will be watching to see if Aston Martin can boost their speed and give Alonso the platform he needs to return to form this year. For insights into Formula 1 car performance and aerodynamics, check out this MIT Motorsports research.
