Mercedes is preparing for a major shake-up at the Monaco Grand Prix after both cars struggled during a difficult qualifying session. Team principal Toto Wolff called their performance “abysmal” when speaking to Sky Sports F1.

George Russell and rookie Kimi Antonelli both failed to reach Q3, so they will start from 14th and 15th positions. Technical problems derailed Russell’s session in Q2, while Antonelli crashed his W16 at the end of Q1.

This year’s Monaco race will be the first in history to feature an FIA-mandated two-stop strategy. The new rule is designed to increase the chance of exciting battles and shake up the traditional processional nature of the circuit.

In Monaco, overtaking is notoriously tough, so most teams tend to defend their positions after qualifying. The new requirement means teams must rethink how they’ll approach pit strategy, including the possible use of extremely early or late stops.

When asked about their approach, Wolff refused to rule out an unconventional plan. He told Viaplay the team had considered “very long or very short” stints and hinted that Mercedes might attempt something “a bit nuts” with their tactics to take advantage of the new race rules.

The Austrian chief believes starting near the back allows for a creative approach since there is little to lose but potential places to gain. Antonelli backed up his team boss’s view and said a so-called “crazy” strategy may be their best chance to recover from such a low grid start.

The Italian driver explained to Sky Sports F1 that nobody at Mercedes expected both cars to qualify this far down, so riskier tactics are necessary to climb up the order. He plans to speak with the team to discuss all possibilities before the race.

The change in strategy possibilities has certainly increased anticipation in the paddock. Some teams are worried about chaos, but others sense an opportunity to turn a tough Saturday into a successful Sunday.

In the past, Monaco races rarely featured position changes after the opening laps. The new pit stop rule adds a level of unpredictability that could favor teams willing to try something bold, turning the event into a true racing lottery.

Recent F1 developments in Monaco also include penalties for Lewis Hamilton after clashes with Max Verstappen, and Lando Norris setting a new qualifying record. These events have added more intrigue to an already unpredictable weekend, with several drivers now facing new grid orders due to additional penalties.

Heading into Sunday’s race, McLaren leads both the drivers’ and teams’ standings. The British squad’s pairing of Oscar Piastri and Norris have 146 and 133 points respectively, ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen on 124.

Mercedes sits second in the team standings with 147 points, well behind McLaren’s 279. Now, all eyes are on how Mercedes will react to their difficult qualifying.

With the new two-stop rule and their poor starting positions, Wolff and Antonelli both know that a standard approach will likely offer little reward. As a result, fans should expect to see Mercedes experiment with strategy in their effort to salvage points in one of the sport’s oldest and most unpredictable races.
