Ross Chastain did something special at the 2025 Coca-Cola 600, NASCAR’s longest race of the year at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Starting from the back of the field and driving a backup car, Chastain raced his way through the pack and made history with a charge to the front.
He took the top spot from William Byron in the final laps and crossed the finish line first after 400 grueling laps, collecting his sixth career win and the first of the season for Trackhouse Racing.
William Byron looked almost unbeatable for much of the night. Driving the No. 24 Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports, Byron led a remarkable 283 of 400 laps and swept all three stages.
But with less than 10 laps left, he could not hold off Chastain’s momentum and finished second, just 0.673 seconds behind. Chase Briscoe, who started on the pole in his No. 19 Toyota, was the highest-finishing Toyota driver in third spot.
Brad Keselowski was the first Ford to cross the line, taking fourth, followed by Chase Elliott in fifth position.
The race featured its share of trouble. Denny Hamlin, who ran inside the top five late, had to come down pit road for fuel with only a few laps to go, dropping him back to 16th.
Eight drivers did not finish the event, including Kyle Larson, who suffered crashes in both the Indianapolis 500 earlier in the day and the Coca-Cola 600 that evening.
Jimmie Johnson, making his 700th NASCAR Cup Series start, was collected in an early accident and finished 40th, marking a low point in a milestone night for the veteran.
Rounding out the top ten were A.J. Allmendinger for Kaulig Racing, Michael McDowell for Spire Motorsports, Christopher Bell for Joe Gibbs Racing, Ryan Preece for RFK Racing, and Noah Gragson driving for Front Row Motorsports.
Each brought their cars home on the lead lap in a race that lasted over four hours and saw many strategy calls play out on pit road as teams fought fatigue and track conditions.
Further down the order, Erik Jones, Shane van Gisbergen, Kyle Busch, and Joey Logano each managed to stay on track and pick up valuable points for their teams.
Some rookies and part-time drivers also made their presence felt, putting in consistent laps despite the challenges of NASCAR’s longest race.
Late-race cautions and fuel concerns kept the outcome uncertain until the very end.
For Chastain and Trackhouse Racing, this win marks a highlight in their 2025 campaign, especially after a tough start to the season.
Chastain showed poise under pressure and made the right moves when it counted most. For the rest of the field, there will be lessons to learn and adjustments to make as attention shifts to the next stop on the calendar.
The Coca-Cola 600 continues to prove why it is one of the most demanding races each season, testing both equipment and endurance.
With a mix of high drama, strategic gambles, and unexpected results, the 2025 edition provided fans with another memorable chapter in NASCAR history.
