Jimmie Johnson saw his 700th NASCAR Cup Series start come to an abrupt end on Sunday night at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. The seven-time Cup champion, who has four previous wins in the Coca-Cola 600, exited just after completing 112 of the scheduled 400 laps.
Johnsonโs No. 84 Legacy Motor Club Toyota spun in Turn 4 and set off a multi-car crash that collected both Connor Zilisch and Cole Custer. While Zilisch and Custer were able to resume racing, Johnsonโs night was finished, making him the first driver out of NASCARโs longest race.
Earlier in the day, Johnson had participated in a special two-seater run at the Indianapolis 500, driving with NFL legend Tom Brady as his passenger. That high-profile start was followed by an unfortunate end in Charlotte, where Johnson was hoping to add another strong run to his part-time schedule.
After the accident, Johnson was quick to take responsibility, explaining, โI just made a rookie mistake. Traffic in these cars is different, and I made a move I shouldnโt have. By the time I realized it, it was already too late.โ His words showed both honesty and the tough adjustment even veterans face with todayโs Cup cars. Johnsonโs crash happened early in the second stage and placed him last in the final standings, 40th position overall unless post-race technical penalties change the result. This yearโs Coke 600 marked only Johnsonโs second start of the Cup season, following a dramatic third-place finish in the Daytona 500 earlier.
Although his return was highly anticipated, Sundayโs race ended without a chance for a comeback. Johnson will stay on as a part-time driver, a role he has held since stepping away from full-time action after the 2020 season. Despite his early exit, Johnson shared that he was proud to see the other Legacy Motor Club cars, the No. 42 and No. 43, running well during the race. As one of the teamโs co-owners, he pointed to their strong performance as a highlight, saying, โI wish I was still out there,โ but cheering on his teammates and the organization.
The milestone start put Johnson among an elite group, joining just 21 other drivers in Cup Series history who have reached 700 career races. Johnsonโs night was another reminder of how unpredictable the famed Coca-Cola 600 can be. To explore the history of this iconic race, see Charlotte Motor Speedwayโs official page.
While championship hopes remain for other drivers, Johnsonโs focus will turn to his next scheduled Cup events later in the season. The racing community will watch closely to see if he can rebound after a disappointing end to such a landmark night.
