Lando Norris ended a difficult stretch in Formula 1 by claiming victory at the Monaco Grand Prix on May 26. The British driver started from pole, setting a new lap record at the famous Circuit de Monaco.
This was his first pole and win since the season kicked off in Australia. The win also allowed Norris to narrow teammate Oscar Piastriโs lead in the driversโ standings to just three points with the Spanish Grand Prix approaching.
Speaking after the race, Norris addressed recent stories about his struggles in qualifying this year. He pushed back at the coverage, saying most of it was untrue.
โPeople have their own opinions, they can do all of those things,โ Norris said. โThing is, none of them are true, 99% of the time. So, itโs all crap.โ
He added that as long as he and his McLaren team know the true situation, thatโs what matters. Norris emphasized how hard he had worked over the past months to find the momentum and confidence he enjoyed earlier in the season.
The result in Monaco was especially meaningful for Norris because of his battles in recent qualifying sessions. After a run of Q3 errors, he lost valuable points by starting further down the grid.
Norris explained that securing pole felt even more emotional than the win itself. โThatโs how much [pole] meant to me, to kind of get my groove back in qualifying,โ he said.
He acknowledged the strength of the competition, citing rivals like Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen, and noted the nonstop effort required to compete at the top.
After Monaco, the 2025 F1 driver standings show Oscar Piastri with 161 points, Lando Norris with 158, and Max Verstappen at 136. McLaren leads the teamsโ standings at 319 points, followed by Mercedes at 147 and Red Bull at 143.
The calendar ahead features races in Spain, Canada, Austria, Britain, and Belgium within the next two months. Recent stories around the paddock also include George Russell being praised for a clever move and Max Verstappen joking about making four stops in next yearโs Monaco race.
Alongside Norrisโ success, headlines from Monaco included Charles Leclercโs heartbreak after missing out on victory and Carlos Sainzโs requests for a Grand Prix investigation. Max Verstappen also responded with a sarcastic remark about the challenging Monaco event, highlighting the mixed reactions among top drivers. More details on these mixed reactions can be found in the Monaco GP winners and losers.
The season so far has maintained a tight battle at the top, with Piastri, Norris, and Verstappen pulling clear in the points.
Norris made it clear that, despite his impressive Monaco performance, more work lies ahead for him and McLaren. He pointed to continued development on both the car and his driving, looking for further improvements as the season continues. His breakthrough win in Monaco marked a significant turning point for the team.
With the next race set for the Circuit de Catalunya in Spain on June 1, Norris remains firmly in the hunt for the championship lead.
