Ollie Bearman has been given a strong message ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix by his team principal at Haas, Ayao Komatsu. Bearman, who scored points in Bahrain and had a promising start in the early part of the season, has faced challenges since then, including a mechanical failure that forced him to retire from a recent race.
The British driver, just 19, is currently sitting 16th in the Formula 1 Driver Standings with 6 points, the same total as his teammate, Nico Hulkenberg. Komatsu has praised Bearman for his speed and racing ability, noting several weekends where the young driver showed great promise.
Despite setbacks, especially in Australia with two practice crashes and a gearbox problem during qualifying, Bearman managed to rally with points finishes in China, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia. However, the team boss has now made it clear that consistent and error-free performances are needed to unlock more success on track.
After reviewing his performances, Komatsu pointed out specific areas for improvement. In Miami, Bearman suffered a crash, and while his drive in Imola was strong, Monaco also saw a minor incident that prevented a completely clean weekend.
Komatsu told reporters that a focus on piecing together a weekend free of mistakes is not just desired but โextremely importantโ for Bearmanโs growth and results. The Ferrari junior driver has demonstrated his talent on several occasions, but Komatsu believes that completing a Grand Prix weekend without errors is key for Bearman to consistently reach his full potential.
The team views Bearman as a driver with proven skill, race pace, and racecraft, emphasizing that when he manages a smooth run through practice, qualifying, and the race, good results naturally follow. So far, Bearmanโs best performances have come during weekends with minimal issues, and Haas is confident in his ability to deliver when conditions allow.
Looking ahead, the Spanish Grand Prix is seen as a pivotal opportunity for Bearman to deliver the clean and consistent weekend his team is requesting. Haasโs faith in his potential remains high, and the hope is that a seamless performance in Spain could see Bearman adding more points to his season tally.
The teamโs focus is on building momentum leading into the summer races, starting with a trouble-free outing at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. As the Formula 1 season pushes forward, all eyes will be on Bearman to see if he can answer his team bossโs call.
A consistent, mistake-free effort at the Spanish Grand Prix could help secure his place as a dependable points scorer for Haas and move him further up the driversโ championship standings. The race presents another test for the young British talent to turn promise into meaningful results.
