Piastri completed 13 laps in the session, while Norris put in 17 laps, finishing just 0.526 seconds behind the leader. Charles Leclerc, driving for Ferrari, secured third place on the chart, trailing Piastri by 0.743 seconds after 16 laps.

For most of the session, Mercedes drivers were strong contenders. George Russell and rookie Kimi Antonelli ran at the top of the timing sheets for much of the hour before push laps late in the session shuffled the order.

Russell ended up in fourth with a time just 0.752 seconds behind Piastri after 17 laps, showing the pace of the Mercedes W16. Max Verstappen rounded out the top five for Red Bull, posting a best time of 0.988 seconds off the lead.

Incidents were limited during this practice run, but Lando Norris did have a moment at Turn 9, where he ran wide and had to use the escape road to avoid damage after bottoming out. Meanwhile, at the back, Haas found the session challenging.

Esteban Ocon finished 18th with a gap of 1.751 seconds, and Oliver Bearman closed out the field in 20th, more than two seconds behind Piastri, after each completed a modest number of laps.

The rest of the field offered a solid mix of established stars and younger talent. Isack Hadjar for Racing Bulls finished sixth, Kimi Antonelli seventh, and Fernando Alonso placed eighth with Aston Martin, just ahead of Lewis Hamilton in the second Ferrari.

Others in the top ten included Liam Lawson for Racing Bulls, driving 17 laps to end in tenth place. Both Kick Sauber drivers, Gabriel Bortoleto and Nico Hulkenberg, put in steady runs to finish 11th and 12th respectively.

Carlos Sainz led the Williams effort in 13th, with Yuki Tsunoda and Lance Stroll following. The Alpine team saw Pierre Gasly end up 16th while Franco Colapinto clocked the most laps of the day, with 22.

Alex Albon in the second Williams recorded just five laps, dropping him to 19th, ahead of Bearman.

With only three Grands Prix at the Circuit de Catalunya being won from lower than the front row in 34 events, practice results took on extra weight for qualifying preparations. Teams focused on fine-tuning car set-ups, hoping to secure a strong starting place in one of the season’s most pivotal qualifying sessions.

The top times and tight margins provided fans and teams a preview of what to expect in Saturday’s qualifying. The session set the stage for an exciting qualifying showdown, with McLaren holding clear pace advantages while rivals like Ferrari, Mercedes, and Red Bull closely trail.

All eyes now turn to see if Piastri and Norris can convert practice speed into a front-row start, or if challengers like Leclerc and Russell can up the pressure. The story of the weekend remains wide open at the Spanish Grand Prix.

Max Verstappen rounded out the top five for Red Bull, posting a best time of 0.988 seconds off the lead, showcasing the speed that could define his title challenge this season.
