Lewis Hamilton is targeting his first podium with Ferrari as the Spanish Grand Prix approaches, ending a wait that dates back 189 days. The seven-time world champion will start Sundayโs race from fifth on the grid at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
That result marks his best qualifying performance since joining Ferrari this season. Hamilton has raced to podium finishes in sprint events, winning in China and taking third place in Miami, but a regular grand prix top-three spot for Ferrari still eludes him.
His last podium appearance in Formula 1 came during the Las Vegas Grand Prix in November last year. Hamilton spoke about his anticipation for the upcoming race, highlighting how close the cars are in performance during qualifying.
He noted to Sky F1 that only half a tenth of a second separated drivers between sixth and eleventh, calling the margins โpretty mad.โ Hamilton admits the long run on Sunday will be a tough challenge for everyone, since most of the field opted for soft tyres and only a few, including Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc, have two sets of mediums.
The British driver believes that strategy and tyre management will play a huge role in the final result. Looking to improve on recent results, Hamilton said his main target is to step back onto the podium.
โI havenโt had a podium for God knows how long, so thatโs my target,โ he stated. While Hamiltonโs efforts in qualifying put him ahead of Leclerc for just the second time this year, the path wasnโt straightforward.
He explained that during Fridayโs FP2 session, he faced a difficult problem with the carโs floor that caused a major loss of downforce and shifted the balance. This issue saw him out of the top ten in the time sheets.
Ferrariโs engineers managed to resolve the problem before qualifying, which allowed Hamilton to drive with more confidence and push into Q3. He reported that the car felt much more stable and enjoyable to drive in the final session, giving him a chance to compete at the front end of the grid.
โWe clearly have made an improvement going into qualifying to get into Q3 when itโs so close, and to be in the top five โ Iโm really happy with that,โ Hamilton said. With the Spanish Grand Prix fast approaching, Hamilton and Ferrari now have a big opportunity to end their podium drought.
The race will test both the driversโ racecraft and the teamsโ approach to strategies. For Hamilton, it will also be a key milestone as he adapts to his new surroundings and looks for a breakthrough result.
Fans and analysts will watch closely as Hamilton attempts to return to the podium for the first time in a regular grand prix since late 2023. The question remains whether Ferrariโs improvements and his experience can finally deliver the result heโs seeking.
The Spanish Grand Prix promises to be a battle where precision, pace, and planning will determine who finishes on top. Recent struggles and expectations from McLaren riders also add context to Hamiltonโs season challenges, as highlighted in his performances at Monaco.
