Oscar Piastri claimed a commanding victory at the 2025 Spanish Grand Prix, taking the win from pole and increasing his lead in the Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship. The Australian driver now holds 186 points, creating a 10-point margin over McLaren teammate Lando Norris, who finished second in Barcelona.
Charles Leclerc crossed the line third after a strategic late-race move, putting Ferrari back into focus at the sharp end of the championship. Max Verstappen had a dramatic afternoon, starting strong but encountering trouble in the final stint.
The four-time world champion finished fifth on the road, but a 10-second penalty for a collision with George Russell dropped him to tenth. Verstappen sits third in the standings on 137 points, with George Russell and Charles Leclerc trailing at 111 and 94 points, respectively.
Lewis Hamilton, now racing for Ferrari, took home sixth place in the race and has 71 points in the drivers’ contest. The race began with only 19 drivers on the grid after Lance Stroll withdrew due to an ongoing wrist issue.
Yuki Tsunoda, starting from the pit lane, joined late. Piastri got off to a quick start, with Verstappen challenging and overtaking Norris early, while Ferrari teammates Leclerc and Sainz battled close.
Hamilton swapped positions with Leclerc at the front. Tyre strategy played a major part, as Piastri temporarily lost the lead to Verstappen during pit stops but soon regained control as Verstappen’s pace faded.
High tension arrived on lap 55, when Kimi Antonelli spun his Mercedes, bringing out a safety car and bunching up the field.
On the lap 61 restart, Piastri, Norris, and others on soft tyres pressured Verstappen, who was on hards after four stops.
The action intensified, and Verstappen’s incident with Russell created even more drama. Nico Hulkenberg, driving for Stake F1, achieved his best result since 2019 by finishing fifth—passing Hamilton in the late stages.
Esteban Ocon, Pierre Gasly, and Isack Hadjar completed the points scorers along with Norris and Leclerc. In the Constructors’ standings, McLaren’s one-two finish further solidified their position at the top.
The team now has 362 points, holding a 197-point lead over Ferrari, who move into second with 165 points. Mercedes sits third at 159, and Red Bull is close behind with 144.
Williams, Racing Bulls, Haas, Stake, Aston Martin, and Alpine follow in the team rankings. During post-race interviews, Norris praised Piastri’s strong pace and was pleased with the double podium for McLaren.
Piastri expressed his satisfaction with the weekend and highlighted the team’s solid all-round performance. The Spanish Grand Prix also saw heartbreak for Antonelli and Alexander Albon, as neither finished the race after separate incidents.
With Piastri now 49 points ahead of Verstappen and building momentum, the F1 season heads next to Montreal, Canada. The championship fight continues with McLaren in charge, rivals Ferrari and Red Bull looking to close the gap, and several midfield teams seizing opportunities in a year marked by fierce competition and unpredictable outcomes. McLaren’s continued development of their F1 front wing has been a key factor in their strong performance this season.
