Nick Cassidy returned to winning ways in Formula E by taking a strong victory at the second Shanghai E-Prix race, held in some of the toughest weather seen this season. The event took place on June 1 and brought heavy rain that soaked the track before the start.
Cassidy, driving for Jaguar, started the race from pole position and managed to maintain his lead throughout, despite the waterlogged conditions and pressure from his rivals.
Rainfall forced organizers to begin the race behind the safety car, with the entire grid following for the first six laps.
When the rolling start finally got underway, Cassidy led the field, closely followed by Antonio Felix da Costa from Porsche. Championship leader Oliver Rowland, who had a difficult qualifying and started in 17th, was unable to make progress, finishing outside the points in 13th.
Overtaking was especially difficult on the Shanghai circuit, as standing water made it nearly impossible for drivers to venture off the racing line. Attempting passes meant risking aquaplaning, which caught out several drivers.
Pascal Wehrlein, also racing for Porsche, challenged Cassidy after the first round of attack mode but slipped off the circuit at Turn 7 and lost ground, eventually crossing the line in second. Mistakes were common in the slippery conditions.
David Beckmann spun his car twice for the ERT team, while Maximilian Gรผnther retired his Maserati due to a red car warning. These incidents shuffled the midfield order slightly, but the frontrunners remained largely unchanged as the laps ticked by.
Most drivers in the top positions kept their places from start to finish. Cassidyโs victory broke a winless streak that stretched back to Berlin last year, marking his first triumph of this season.
With Wehrlein and da Costa securing second and third, Porsche celebrated a double podium finish. The dayโs result had a significant impact on the championship picture, as Rowlandโs position means the title battle will continue at least until the Berlin double-header in July.
There will be no early champion crowned in Jakarta, as originally possible if Rowland had scored well. The Shanghai E-Prix showcased the driversโ skill in difficult monsoon-like weather, where managing both speed and safety was essential.
With only a handful of races left on the calendar, fans can expect a tense fight for the championship across the final rounds. For now, Cassidy and Jaguar enjoy a well-earned win after a challenging race day in China.
