Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris both spoke out after a moment in Spanish Grand Prix qualifying drew reactions from fans and the paddock. The McLaren pair started side by side on the front row after Piastri took the largest pole margin of the season, finishing 0.209 seconds ahead of Norris in Q3 at Circuit de Catalunya.

While Norris held a slender advantage of just 0.017 seconds after the first run in Q3, he picked up a short tow from Piastri as the Australian finished his first lap. Some observers called the move “cheeky,” but both drivers later dismissed any suggestion of intentional team strategy.

Piastri explained that he went out for his first Q3 run earlier than others, and the timing simply resulted in Norris lining up behind him as he began his flying lap. He mentioned that crossing the line to see another McLaren closing in created some questions but stressed there was nothing planned.

“Unless Lando is about to reveal a big secret, it was just a coincidence,” Piastri said to media after qualifying.

Norris backed up Piastri’s account. He told reporters that he was not aware Oscar would be ahead and that he had only been looking for a slipstream from any car ahead in the queue.

Norris said he counted himself unlucky that it turned out to be his teammate, and the timing in the pit lane left little control over who provided a tow.

The Spanish Grand Prix qualifying session proved significant for McLaren, with Piastri making up 0.226 seconds on Norris between their first and second Q3 laps. That performance locked out the front row for the team at one of the season’s most technical tracks.

For Norris, it underlined how tight margins are at the top, especially as he was searching for just hundredths of a second wherever possible.

Qualifying also saw changes elsewhere. Lance Stroll withdrew from the Grand Prix on medical advice, prompting an adjusted starting grid for Sunday’s race.

The absence of Stroll highlighted how unpredictable a race week can be, with new opportunities opening for drivers and teams.

The results mark one of the strongest McLaren performances of the year, as both drivers continue to feature high in the points standings. After this qualifying, Piastri led with 161 points and Norris was close behind at 158 in the drivers’ championship.

Their strong form helped McLaren top the teams’ table with 319 points.

As the race approached, both drivers looked ahead to building on their qualifying result. The focus shifted to strategy and the run to Turn 1, with each aiming to convert the front row into a win for McLaren.

The team’s performance gave fans hope for another competitive battle at the Spanish Grand Prix.
