Oscar Piastri has entered the McLaren F1 history books by matching Ayrton Sennaโs record of eight consecutive podium finishes for the team. At the Spanish Grand Prix, Piastri started from pole and showed dominant pace throughout the race.
The only lead changes came during the pit-stop phases, but he regained control and surged ahead after a late safety car, managing the restart without any trouble. This victory marked his fifth win from the seasonโs opening nine races, extending his lead in the driversโ standings to 10 points over teammate Lando Norris, who secured second place. More on Verstappen, Norris, and Piastriโs form in Spain.
Piastriโs podium streak is especially impressive given the competition. He finished third in Japan, Imola, and Monaco earlier this year.
The only race in which he missed the podium was his home Grand Prix in Australia, where he finished ninth after a chaotic, rain-affected event. With his result in Spain, Piastri has equaled Sennaโs legendary run with McLaren, which took place between the Mexican and Belgian Grands Prix in the 1988 season.
Senna recorded six wins and two second-place finishes in that period, with the rare interruption coming at Monza after a collision ended his hopes in that race. For McLaren, consecutive podium finishes by a driver are a signal of both car performance and consistency.
While Piastriโs eight-straight podiums are equal to Sennaโs, the teamโs record belongs to Lewis Hamilton. As a rookie in 2007, Hamilton finished on the podium in his first nine races, from his debut in Australia to the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. Hamiltonโs remarkable rookie streak is still celebrated by McLaren fans.
His streak concluded when he finished ninth at the rain-soaked 2007 European Grand Prix. This sets up Piastri with a chance to match Hamiltonโs record if he secures another podium in the upcoming Canadian Grand Prix, a race where McLaren is expected to be strong.
In the larger picture of Formula 1, the all-time record for consecutive podiums is held by Michael Schumacher. He managed an incredible 19 consecutive podiums from the 2001 United States Grand Prix through to the 2002 Japanese Grand Prix, before finishing fourth in Australia at the start of 2003.
Piastriโs current form has drawn attention, as drivers rarely display such consistency so early in a season, and few have matched achievements of F1โs historic greats.
Oscar Piastriโs performance in 2025 has placed him in the spotlight. After nine races, he leads the championship with 186 points, followed by teammate Norris on 176 and Max Verstappen with 137 points.
In the constructorsโ standings, McLaren leads with 362 points, ahead of Ferrari and Mercedes. This reflects not only consistent individual results from Piastri but also the teamโs resurgence at the front of the grid, aided by the improvements in McLarenโs front wing design.
Fans are watching closely as the season moves to Canada. Piastri has shown poise under pressure and a maturity that reflects legends like Senna and Hamilton.
With McLaren performing at this level, and a record within sight, all eyes will be on whether Piastri can extend his remarkable streak and make further F1 history at the next race.
