Pierre Gasly faced a surprising challenge in the Spanish Grand Prix last weekend. The Alpine F1 driver had to complete all 66 laps without any access to water, as his drink system failed right at the start.

When the race began at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, the air temperature was measured at 29.5°C, but conditions inside the cockpit were much hotter. Hydration is important for drivers, especially at such hot races, but this time Gasly had no way to cool off or rehydrate during the event.

Gasly spoke about the difficulties after the race, explaining that he discovered the issue just as he was getting in the car on Sunday. With no way to fix the system, he quickly realized it was going to be a long and tough afternoon behind the wheel.

Despite these problems, he managed to finish eighth. This result gave Gasly his second point-scoring finish of the season, which was meaningful for both him and the Alpine team.

Alpine’s position in the Constructors’ Championship, however, continued to slip. Nico Hulkenberg, racing for Stake, finished fifth and scored important points for his team, pushing Alpine to last place among all teams.

During the race, Gasly fought hard but faced more setbacks with blue flags forcing him to yield to faster cars. When leading drivers such as Oscar Piastri, Lando Norris, and Max Verstappen approached, Gasly had to slow down, costing him about two seconds each time.

The French driver also highlighted the difficulty with tire management during Sunday’s race. Alpine had some concerns about tire degradation and keeping competitive pace over long stints.

In his first stint, Gasly made a strategic switch to medium tires in response to Hulkenberg, who chose softs. This move forced Gasly to extend his run and try to keep his pace while fighting against both traffic and tire wear.

Despite these tough conditions, Gasly still managed to stay within the top 10 and secure four valuable points for Alpine. He said these points were especially important at the end of a busy triple-race stretch.

The result offered a positive note for the team as they look for ways to improve in upcoming rounds and climb up from the bottom of the championship table. Next up, Alpine and Gasly will be seeking further improvements with the hope of more consistent point finishes in the coming races.

The Spanish Grand Prix may have been physically demanding, but the experience has added extra motivation to the team’s efforts as the Formula 1 season continues.
