Yuki Tsunoda continues to face a tough period in Formula 1 after another challenging weekend at the Spanish Grand Prix in Imola. Since joining Red Bull, Tsunoda has struggled to find the pace required, with the recent event highlighting ongoing issues.
During qualifying, Tsunoda ended as the slowest driver in the opening Q1 segment and started from the back of the grid. Car changes before the race meant he had to begin from the pit lane.
He managed to climb to 13th place by the end, but it became the second race in a row without any points for Red Bull. These recent results have triggered a planned trip to Red Bullโs headquarters in Milton Keynes ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix.
Tsunoda is set to work side-by-side with the engineering team, striving to make improvements in speed and car setup. He remains positive about the upcoming work, stating, โThereโs something that weโve got to try. That will hopefully make something different.โ
โAnd I mean, it canโt get worse than this weekend, to be honest.โ His comments reflect determination to turn the season around after disappointing finishes.
Part of the planned visit will include the use of the teamโs simulator.
Tsunoda noted that these sessions are more valuable for engineers than for himself directly. He explained that the simulator helps the technical staff test new configurations and look for new trends that might suit his driving style.
โMaybe my engineer can find a good trend or good characteristic in my driving style or whatever. Other than that, my perspective, itโs more towards the team and engineering learning,โ he said. The process allows the team limited time to try different setups, but Tsunoda hopes it can reveal answers that will result in better performance on track.
Red Bullโs run of two straight races without points is a concern. The team, which is currently fourth in the Constructorsโ standings with 144 points, is behind McLaren, Ferrari, and Mercedes.
In the driver rankings, Max Verstappen is third with 137 points, while Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris lead the field. The battle for top positions remains tight as teams prepare for the next round in Canada, with every meeting in the simulator holding potential to shift the balance.
Elsewhere in the F1 world, conversations focus on major incidents like Max Verstappenโs clash with George Russell and ongoing questions about Lewis Hamiltonโs competitiveness. Off-track drama and on-track results are combining to make this season unpredictable for fans of all teams. Hamiltonโs recent responses to Ferrariโs claims have added to the ongoing debate around his form this year.
The governing body, FIA, has also been at the center of attention, making decisions on important rule changes and reviewing penalties and past race events. With the Canadian Grand Prix approaching on June 15 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Red Bull, Tsunoda, and his engineering crew are hoping their work pays off.
The season is far from over, but quick solutions are needed if the team wants to return to the top step and challenge for both team and driver titles. The results from the Milton Keynes trip could make a big difference as the fight for points heats up.
