Ralf Schumacher shared his view on Max Verstappen’s situation at Red Bull Racing, focusing on whether the Dutch driver will wait for the team to deliver another car capable of winning championships. Schumacher questioned if Verstappen has the patience needed as Red Bull experiences a significant decline in performance.
After dominating the first half of the ground effect era in Formula 1, the team’s fortunes changed. The RB20 started strong last year, but Red Bull slumped to third in the standings by season’s end.
So far, Red Bull ranks fourth in the championship after nine rounds this season. Verstappen is now 49 points behind Oscar Piastri in the title chase, despite the Dutch driver’s impressive displays.
Verstappen’s results this year have stood out even more when compared to teammates Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda, who have struggled with the RB21. Schumacher feels the current issues may last a while.
He said on Sky Sports Germany that if Verstappen wants to leave before 2028, his contract’s final year, nothing will prevent his exit. Schumacher also argued that the working environment under team principal Christian Horner and technical director Pierre Wache is not good, suggesting the team no longer understands its cars.
There have been reports about unrest at Red Bull, and Schumacher went further by claiming that former employees do not want to return under the current management. According to him, the atmosphere is poor, and previous hires are not keen to rejoin, creating a bigger challenge for Red Bull as they try to rebuild.
Verstappen, meanwhile, remains under contract but expects a competitive car. Schumacher said the team needs fresh personnel and a new direction, and that takes time — another reason Verstappen’s patience may be tested.
Multiple updates to the car have not delivered the turnaround Red Bull hoped for, something Schumacher highlighted. He questioned why Verstappen should believe that Pierre Wache will suddenly craft a title-winning car given the current track record of failed updates.
This year’s standings paint a difficult picture for Red Bull as they remain stuck behind McLaren, Ferrari, and Mercedes after the opening third of the season. Despite the tension, Schumacher noted Verstappen likely feels a strong connection to Red Bull, comparing the team to family.
He believes Verstappen does not have to make a rushed decision and can wait until later in the season, even beyond the summer break. Verstappen’s loyalty to Red Bull remains clear, but he is also known for his hunger for victory.
Red Bull, on their part, are determined to keep their star driver and return to winning form. All eyes will be on Red Bull’s performance in upcoming races and on whether Verstappen chooses to extend his stay or pursue a new challenge elsewhere.
With the next Formula 1 regulation changes approaching, the Dutchman’s decision could shape the team’s direction for years to come. The situation around Verstappen and Red Bull continues to generate questions and interest throughout the paddock, much like the ongoing demands seen at Ferrari.
