DTM Zandvoort: Rene Rast takes lights-to-flag win
Rene Rast delivered a flawless drive for Team Schubert at Zandvoort, controlling the DTM feature from pole to the checkered flag. The BMW driver bounced back after a tough Saturday and made no mistakes as he held the front all race long.
Marco Wittmann, his teammate at Schubert Motorsport, gave chase throughout the final laps but was unable to find a way past, finishing second. Both Rast and Wittmann showed strong pace, with the two BMW M4 GT3s clearly outpacing the rest of the field on the dry Dutch circuit.
After the race, Rast explained how challenging it was from inside the car, both mentally and physically. “We made up for yesterday’s blunder and I’m super happy,” Rast said.
Wittmann, who overtook Jack Aitken at the start to move into the runner-up spot, noted that teammates sometimes avoid risky maneuvers for the benefit of the team, and today that teamwork paid off. Wittmann’s effort secured an impressive one-two finish for Schubert Motorsport, marking a high point for BMW’s campaign at Zandvoort.
The 2025 DTM Sunday race offered a calm contrast to Saturday’s chaos, with the event unfolding under dry conditions and yielding few major incidents. Early drama saw Jordan Pepper from Grasser Lamborghini retire after a puncture in the opening lap scramble.
Meanwhile, the contest for the podium heated up between Thomas Preining and Jack Aitken. Preining, driving a Porsche, managed to edge out Aitken to secure that final podium spot.
Behind the top three, Maro Engel crossed the line in fifth and led a pack featuring Luca Engstler, Lucas Auer, Jules Gounon, Mirko Bortolotti, and Arjun Maini. Lucas Auer’s result allowed him to hold on to the DTM drivers’ championship lead, now trailed by Rast, who moved into second place and sits 16 points back.
Saturday winner Ayhancan Guven slipped to a tie for third in the standings, sharing that position with Jules Gounon. The balance at the top of the leaderboard promises a close fight as the season continues.
Attention now shifts to the next round on July 4-6. The racing heads to the Norisring, Nuremberg’s famous street circuit and the only one of its kind on the calendar.
Teams and drivers will be looking to carry their momentum onto the tight city layout, where strategy and precision make a difference in every lap. This stage of the DTM season is set for more drama, with the title battle heating up and every championship point up for grabs.
The Zandvoort weekend underlined BMW’s strength and a key comeback for Rast and his team after the previous day’s disappointment. As the action moves to Nuremberg, more shifts in the standings are on the horizon, with the championship fight still wide open.
