Alex Palou has emerged as the dominant force in IndyCar this season, capturing headlines with five wins out of seven races. He also clinched his first-ever Indy 500 victory just a week before a dramatic incident in Detroit.

The Spanish driver, now a three-time series champion, has consistently shown his skill by not only winning races but also finishing on the podium even when adversity strikes. His performance has led to speculation about a potential move to Formula 1, particularly with Cadillac preparing to join the F1 grid in 2026 but yet to finalize its driver lineup.

Rumors have linked Palou to Cadillac’s new project, alongside other names such as Sergio Perez, Valtteri Bottas, and Colton Herta. Although Herta remains ineligible for an F1 super licence, Palou’s consistent IndyCar success has already secured him the necessary 40 points required for F1 eligibility.

However, his prospective jump to Formula 1 is not without controversy. Renger van der Zande, who drove with Palou at the Daytona 24 Hours, has expressed doubts about whether such a move would benefit Palou right now.

Van der Zande suggests that while Cadillac would love to have such a star, Palou’s best option may be to stay put. He believes the new team is unlikely to be competitive at the front from the start.

Palou previously agreed to join McLaren from his current team, Chip Ganassi Racing, but later reversed that decision, leading to ongoing court proceedings over a breach of contract. Van der Zande’s comments reflect the view that Ganassi should do everything possible to retain a driver with Palou’s ability.

He describes Palou as calculating on tire strategy and incredibly fast, likening him to Max Verstappen in terms of dominance and consistency in American racing. According to Van der Zande, Palou remains something of a mystery even to his rivals—rarely flashy, yet always effective at striking when it matters most.

His adaptability and raw speed were further highlighted during a Formula 1 test with McLaren, where he impressed with both his pace and approach. Among his peers, Palou is now seen as not only the top driver in IndyCar but one of the most naturally gifted and versatile racing talents worldwide.

With Cadillac aiming to make its mark in the ultra-competitive world of Formula 1, the team faces a tough task in assembling a driver lineup capable of delivering strong results from day one. Despite ongoing speculation, the clearest message from those closest to Palou is that he has nothing left to prove in IndyCar.

A move to F1 with an unproven team represents a considerable risk. Recent discussions within team garages and among experts reflect a belief that both Palou and Ganassi are better served by focusing on the continued pursuit of wins and championships stateside rather than entering F1’s unpredictable learning curve.

As the 2025 IndyCar season continues, all eyes remain on Palou’s performances and the ongoing legal matters with McLaren. The racing community will be watching closely for any developments regarding Cadillac’s F1 driver choices, but for now, Palou’s immediate future looks tied to the circuits where his star continues to rise.
