Liam Lawson is preparing for his first appearance at the Canadian Grand Prix. The young Racing Bulls driver reached out to Daniel Ricciardo, who took his first Formula 1 win in Montreal ten years ago in 2014.

Ricciardo’s success at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve came after a late move on Nico Rosberg, making his victory one of the highlights of that season.

Lawson, now set to race on the same track, spoke about the value of Ricciardo’s insights as he takes on this new challenge.

In 2023 and 2024, Lawson has only competed in the second half of F1 seasons, often substituting for Ricciardo due to injury. This weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix will mark his debut at the famous Montreal circuit.

Ricciardo’s experience is important here, as he qualified fifth during what became his last Canadian appearance in 2023. Lawson shared that Ricciardo advised him to “use lots of kerb” at the circuit, emphasizing that the track has more bumps and kerbs than most F1 venues.

Ricciardo told him that mastering the kerbs can make a big difference, since the layout is unique and rewards drivers who adapt quickly.

Lawson explained that while the car was fast in Canada last year, past results don’t always predict future performance. Some tracks that have traditionally been weak for the team have produced strong results in the current season, and the opposite is also true.

The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve stands out for its exciting racing features, including double DRS zones and large braking zones. These elements offer frequent overtaking chances and boost the action for fans and drivers alike.

Weather conditions in Montreal are also known for changing quickly. Lawson highlighted that what may seem like a dry race weekend can quickly switch to a wet one, which means teams and drivers must stay alert.

He appreciates Ricciardo’s positive attitude toward the Canadian track, stating that it looks like a fun challenge and one where many drivers enjoy the racing.

The Formula 1 paddock heads into a busy schedule, with the Canadian Grand Prix scheduled for June 15 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. After that, the season continues with stops at Austria’s Red Bull Ring on June 29, the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on July 6, and the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps on July 27.

This year, McLaren leads the constructors’ standings, with Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris at the top, while Max Verstappen and George Russell remain close competitors.

Elsewhere in the motorsport world, the Le Mans 24 Hours qualifying results are in, and there are new developments with top drivers like Lewis Hamilton and Carlos Sainz reacting to speculation about their futures. Lawson’s upcoming race in Montreal comes with pressure and excitement, given his relationship with Ricciardo and the unpredictable nature of the Canadian circuit. As he puts Ricciardo’s advice into practice, all eyes will be on Lawson to see how he handles his first start in Canada and whether he can add his own highlight to the track’s history.
