Oscar Piastri is setting his sights on a major piece of Australian Formula 1 history as he heads into the Canadian Grand Prix. Piastri has already claimed five wins from the first nine races of the 2025 season, putting him atop the driversโ standings with 186 points.
His McLaren teammate, Lando Norris, sits just behind him with 176 points. If Piastri wins in Montreal, he will surpass an all-time record for Australian F1 driversโno one from Australia has ever won more than five races in a single season.
The current record is shared by two Australian legends: Sir Jack Brabham, who notched five wins in 1960, and Alan Jones, who did the same in 1980. Both of those drivers went on to win the world championship in their record-setting years.
Piastri, now part of that elite group, could become only the third Australian to secure a Formula 1 world championship crown. When asked about the milestone, Piastri explained that while breaking records is satisfying, his true focus is on claiming the championship title and helping his team achieve more successes during the season.
Piastri described his rapid rise in 2025 as unexpected, admitting that five wins from nine races surpassed even his own preseason expectations. He reflected on moments where he could have improved but expressed pride in the work both he and McLaren have put in.
Despite his impressive stats, Piastri emphasized that statistics are not his primary motivation. He wants to continue fighting for more victories and stronger championship prospects in the remaining races.
Looking ahead to the Canadian Grand Prix, Piastri feels positive about his chances. He said he has worked on several aspects of his driving since last yearโs event at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve and believes the results will show this weekend.
While some circuits that suited him in 2024 have been more challenging in 2025, and vice versa, he remains confident in his adaptability and understanding of the carโs setup. He described the Canadian track as tough, but one he enjoys, highlighting the challenge of driving error-free on its demanding layout.
With seven career wins already, Piastri is now just one victory shy of equaling Daniel Ricciardoโs eight grand prix triumphs. He is also within striking distance of Mark Webberโs total of nine career wins.
The data shows Piastri is quickly establishing himself among the nationโs greatest F1 drivers. Aside from Brabham and Jonesโs historic championship seasons, Webber claimed four wins in 2010 and Ricciardo had three wins in 2014.
Piastriโs 2025 campaign is on pace to eclipse those marks, with 15 races still left on the calendar. Fans and analysts are following Piastriโs journey closely, eager to see if he can become the third Australian world champion.
The rest of the F1 grid includes top competitors like Max Verstappen, George Russell, and Charles Leclerc, but itโs Piastri who currently leads them. As the title battle unfolds and history beckons, attention now turns to the Canadian Grand Prix on June 15, where Piastri has a chance to make even more Australian F1 history.
