Qualifying at the 2025 Canadian Grand Prix featured close competition and shifts in momentum as drivers faced changing track conditions. The action unfolded at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, where fast lap times and tactical tyre choices kept the grid unpredictable throughout all three sessions.

George Russell captured pole position after a dramatic third qualifying segment. His Mercedes posted a 1:10.899 lap to edge out Max Verstappen, denying the Red Bull driver a chance at the front row.

Oscar Piastri took third, showing strong pace for McLaren to round out the top three. Kimi Antonelli impressed in his rookie season by qualifying fourth for Mercedes, while Lewis Hamilton ensured both Silver Arrows started in the top five.

Lando Norris, who led the timing sheets in Q1, could only secure seventh for the race start, as the battle for grid spots intensified late in Q3.

Yuki Tsunoda struggled throughout the day. After ending his run in Q2, the Japanese driver’s difficulties grew with a 10-place grid penalty from an earlier incident during practice.

That penalty left Tsunoda at the back of the grid, a setback for the Red Bull team amid an already challenging weekend. Others knocked out in Q2 included Franco Colapinto, Nico Hulkenberg, Oliver Bearman, and Esteban Ocon, each unable to match the frontrunners in the crucial moments.

The first qualifying segment presented its own obstacles. The Gilles Villeneuve circuit’s tight passages and slick surface caused several issues, most dramatically for Alex Albon, whose engine cover became damaged and triggered a red flag.

This interruption paused the session and compressed the remaining time to under five minutes. The pressure pushed drivers to find clean laps, with Gabriel Bortoleto, Carlos Sainz, Lance Stroll, Liam Lawson, and Pierre Gasly dropping out in Q1.

Mercedes’ improved performance continued a positive trend seen in free practice, and both Russell and Antonelli delivered under pressure. Red Bull, meanwhile, showed flashes of speed but faced setbacks from Verstappen’s narrow miss at pole and Tsunoda’s penalty.

McLaren’s consistent efforts remained clear with Piastri near the front and Norris inside the top ten, reflecting a season-long momentum in the constructors championship.

In the tight drivers’ standings, Oscar Piastri leads with 186 points, followed by teammate Lando Norris at 176. Max Verstappen sits third at 137, while George Russell moves to fourth on 111 after his qualifying showcase.

Teams and fans now look ahead to Sunday’s race, expecting another unpredictable contest in Montreal where strategy and racecraft will likely play a major role.

With qualifying complete, eyes now turn to the main event. The starting grid promises battles throughout the field, and recent form suggests another thrilling chapter at the Canadian Grand Prix.
