Max Verstappen praised his Red Bull team for making a difficult strategy call on tyres as he narrowly missed out on pole position to George Russell at the Canadian Grand Prix.

Verstappen set an impressive lap during the final segment of qualifying at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, but Russell produced a remarkable run to secure pole, becoming the only driver to post a lap time in the 1 minute 10 second range.

Verstappen, a four-time world champion, ended his session with a low 1:11, which was not quite enough to match Russell’s effort.

Both Verstappen and Russell chose to run the medium compound tyre in qualifying, instead of the softer C6 option. The decision proved to be a challenging one for the teams, given the unpredictable track conditions in Montreal.

Verstappen shared that he was confident about the car’s performance throughout the weekend and was satisfied with how his team responded to the tyre dilemma. He described the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve as feeling like a big go-kart track, emphasizing the excitement of racing over kerbs and the need for efficiency on the straightaways.

Verstappen said the Red Bull car felt strong in qualifying, and he believed they had made the correct strategic tyre choice under pressure.

Finishing second means Verstappen will start the race on the front row, just behind Russell. The Dutch driver commented that while pole position is always preferable, starting from second still offers opportunities, especially with the challenging first corner in Montreal.

Verstappen expressed optimism about converting his qualifying position into a good result during the race, highlighting his contentment with the team’s Saturday achievements. “I’m already very happy with what we achieved today to be on the front row, and hopefully tomorrow we can have a solid race,” he said.

Russell’s pole brought excitement to the Mercedes camp. His ability to set the fastest lap marked another step forward for the team, with Russell continuing to show his potential.

Mercedes was the only team able to break into the 1:10s during qualifying, underlining their improvements in speed and setup. With Verstappen and Red Bull still in close pursuit, the Canadian Grand Prix is set for a close contest between leading teams.

This qualifying session followed a weekend where Verstappen had looked comfortable with his car’s setup. Red Bull’s performance had remained strong, with Verstappen himself reporting the car was “in a good window.”

Both the team and driver focused on balancing straight-line speed and heavy braking, which are critical factors for success at the Canadian track.

As the race approaches, the stage is set for a fierce battle at the front. Verstappen will be aiming for a strong launch from second on the grid, while Russell will start from pole for the second year in a row at Montreal.

The outcome could have significant implications on the championship standings, with McLaren’s Oscar Piastri currently leading on 186 points and Verstappen trailing with 137. With every point counting in the 2025 season, the Canadian Grand Prix promises more drama and close racing between F1’s top contenders.

For McLaren, the season continues to be promising as evidenced by their recent performances, with drivers like Oscar Piastri emphasizing the team’s capabilities, despite challenges shared by other teams such as Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz facing concerns in Monaco.

Lewis Hamilton’s ongoing battles alongside McLaren have also been notable throughout the season, further intensifying the competition at the front especially during Monaco.
