McDowell and Allmendinger Leverage Veteran Edge in Mexico City Race

Michael McDowell and AJ Allmendinger are two names that stand out as the NASCAR Cup Series heads to Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez for its first-ever Viva Mexico 250. While most drivers will be learning this 2.42-mile, 15-turn road course during the weekend, McDowell and Allmendinger raced here nearly 20 years ago.

Both drivers competed in the 2005 Champ Car World Series event in Mexico City. Allmendinger took home second place, while McDowell finished just outside the top ten in eleventh.

However, in the second session, he posted the 25th-fastest time. For Allmendinger, finding speed has been a bit harder, as he did not place inside the top 20 in either practice.

Still, his record speaks for itself. All three of his Cup Series wins have come on road courses, proving just how much of a specialist he is.

However, Allmendinger pointed out that changes to the track and their current race cars mean there is little advantage from prior experience. He also joked that he would prefer sunny weather over rain, but he is not concerned if conditions change.
