George Russell is attracting attention from Aston Martin after his recent win at the Canadian Grand Prix. The 27-year-old British driver, currently racing for Mercedes, is being considered by the Silverstone-based squad to lead its team starting in 2026.

Aston Martin is planning a major push with upcoming Formula 1 regulation changes and has brought legendary designer Adrian Newey on board to develop their next car. As Russell’s contract with Mercedes is set to expire at the end of the season, speculation is growing about where he will drive next year.

When asked about his strong performance in Montreal and how it might affect his talks with Mercedes, Russell remained calm. He explained that he isn’t worried about his seat next season, saying, “It doesn’t hurt at all… I’m not concerned at all about next year. I know I’m going to be on the grid next year.”

Russell added, “I feel that I’m driving better than ever. I still feel I’ve got more in the tank. I feel ready to fight for a world championship.” He made it clear that he is focused on performing each weekend and is enjoying his racing at the moment.

Reports suggest Aston Martin is considering Russell as a key part of their future, but Russell was direct when asked about a move. He said, “No, I’m not talking with anybody else and any teams who have shown interest. I have been quite open to say my intentions are to stay with Mercedes.”

Russell praised Mercedes for giving him his first chance in Formula 1 and expressed loyalty to the team despite swirling rumors.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff offered his perspective on the situation. Wolff remains optimistic that Russell will sign a new deal and highlighted Russell’s progression since joining from Williams.

Wolff noted Russell’s growth in taking a leading role since Lewis Hamilton’s departure. He mentioned that contract talks have an agreed timeline, but race weekends in June and July are keeping both sides busy.

Wolff also emphasized the value Mercedes places on Russell’s long-term ties with the team, noting the importance of experience and steady leadership.

Aston Martin currently has Fernando Alonso under contract through the end of next season, while Lance Stroll is on a year-to-year arrangement. Stroll’s position is unique because his father owns the team, which complicates future lineups.

With new technical regulations set for 2026, Aston Martin aims to build a more competitive car and may seek a top-tier driver like Russell to lead the next era.

Russell’s recent success at Montreal and consistent season performance have made him one of the most sought-after drivers in the paddock. As the Formula 1 driver market heats up, many will watch closely to see if Mercedes can retain him or if Aston Martin can lure him away.

Contract discussions are expected to continue as the season progresses, with key decisions likely announced later in the year.
