Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff has offered advice to McLaren as they manage the growing rivalry between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri during the Formula 1 season.

The McLaren duo currently sit at the top of the drivers’ standings, with Piastri on 198 points and Norris close behind with 176.

Their strong start has helped McLaren reach 374 points in the constructors’ championship, putting them ahead of Mercedes and Ferrari after the most recent Canadian Grand Prix.

However, the recent race in Montreal saw the first real clash between Norris and Piastri, when Norris made contact with the rear of Piastri’s car late in the race.

Wolff, who previously managed the intense relationship between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg at Mercedes during their title battles, spoke about the pressure and difficulty of handling two top drivers on the same team.

He told reporters that the key is to create clear rules of engagement that both drivers understand and accept.

Wolff stressed the importance of setting expectations early, especially when both the drivers’ and constructors’ championships are within reach.

Looking back on his experience with Hamilton and Rosberg, Wolff explained that it takes strong leadership and sometimes learning lessons the hard way to maintain team harmony when both drivers are fighting for victories.

The personalities of Piastri and Norris have drawn attention throughout the season. Piastri is known for his calm and relaxed attitude, while Norris is more open and expressive with his emotions.

Wolff noted that, compared to his own drivers in previous years, Piastri and Norris are different characters and that McLaren will need to deal with their own unique set of challenges.

He explained that there is no simple solution, and that the team will learn from tough moments on track.

This driver’s clash comes in a season full of drama. The Canadian Grand Prix also featured controversy off the track, with Red Bull protesting George Russell’s victory, although their protest was rejected.

Meanwhile, drivers and teams face constant questions about upgrades and team aspirations, such as Ferrari responding to requests for improvements regarding Lewis Hamilton’s move next year, and Mercedes facing strong competition from Red Bull and McLaren.

Fans have been active online, weighing in on the Norris-Piastri clash and debating whether team orders or stronger management is needed to avoid further incidents.

The pressure will remain high as both McLaren drivers continue to push for race wins and championship points.

With several races remaining on the 2025 calendar, including the upcoming events at the Red Bull Ring, Silverstone, and Spa-Francorchamps, every point and every on-track move will be vital.

Wolff concluded that strong, clear management and open communication will be the deciding factors for McLaren as they aim for both titles.

The team’s next moves will be observed closely as the season continues and as Norris and Piastri keep pushing each other at the front of the field.
