Dale Earnhardt Jr. is set to take on a new challenge in the NASCAR Xfinity Series at Pocono Raceway this weekend. The NASCAR Hall of Famer will serve as crew chief for rookie Connor Zilisch and the No. 88 JR Motorsports Chevrolet in Saturday’s Explore the Pocono Mountains 250.
Earnhardt steps into this role while regular crew chief Mardy Lindley serves a one-race suspension after a penalty for two loose lug nuts found at Nashville. The Xfinity Series race is scheduled for June 21 at 3:30 p.m. ET and will air on The CW and MRN Radio.
He expressed eagerness to help after receiving a text from Lindley and referenced the deep family ties between the Earnhardts and Lindleys, dating back to their fathers’ storied racing days. For Earnhardt, this is a chance to be hands-on again, offering more direct support than he can as an owner.
Connor Zilisch, who turns 19 this year, is making his debut at Pocono. He shared his excitement about Earnhardt’s involvement, noting that the racing legend attended pre-race meetings, participated in pit practice, and even learned how to assist with pit stops.
Zilisch called it surreal to have someone of Earnhardt’s stature as crew chief and looks forward to learning from his advice and racing stories. Preparation for the weekend has been thorough.
Earnhardt reviewed race notes and took part in Thursday pit practice with the team. He worked directly with the crew to simulate pit stop roles, ensuring he could support Zilisch and the pit crew effectively.
The atmosphere around the No. 88 hauler was electric on Friday, with Earnhardt’s presence attracting fans and fellow drivers alike. His leadership provided a morale boost for the entire JR Motorsports crew.
Zilisch, who joined veterans like Justin Allgaier and Jamie McMurray to discuss the race, said this experience is one he hopes to remember for years, possibly by saving a piece of memorabilia from the day. Throughout the season, Earnhardt has made occasional starts, but his guidance this weekend promises valuable lessons for the rookie and the entire team.
