Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri’s battle for the Formula 1 championship took a dramatic turn at the Canadian Grand Prix last weekend. The McLaren teammates collided during the race, with Norris suffering terminal damage that ended his run and Piastri taking fourth place.
This result widened Piastri’s championship lead to 22 points over Norris, giving the Australian his strongest margin at the top this season. The pair have been the contenders to watch in 2025, with the MCL39 car winning seven out of ten races so far.
Former Formula 1 driver Jolyon Palmer shared his view on the incident, stating that Norris’s aggressive racing against Piastri was a clear “signal of intent.” According to Palmer, Norris showed he is willing to take big risks in his pursuit to overtake his teammate, signaling that any form of team order or partnership may now be finished.
Palmer believes this moment marks the point when both drivers realize that cooperation has ended, and the fight for the title is all about individual success.
Despite losing out on points in Canada, Norris showed impressive pace during the weekend. Palmer pointed out that Norris’s performance before the crash indicated it could have been his best drive of the 2025 season.
He recalled Norris’s previous successes, such as his Abu Dhabi win last year and pole position at Monaco, to show that Norris has proven he can perform at the highest level during critical moments.
Oscar Piastri capitalized on Norris’s misfortune, bringing his points total up to 198 after ten races. Norris now sits at 176 points, with Max Verstappen in third at 155.
The McLaren duo’s strong form has also placed the team at the top of the constructors’ standings with 374 points, as Mercedes trails with 199 and Ferrari follows with 183. Piastri’s consistent finishes and five victories have helped him maintain first place in the drivers’ rankings, while Norris continues to chase for his first title.
Tensions were high in the McLaren garage after the crash, as team management faced questions about whether to issue team orders for future races. The crash in Canada forced both drivers and engineers to reflect on how to keep the championship push on track without further intra-team incidents.
Many observers believe that the team faces a challenging balance between allowing both drivers to race freely and avoiding costly mistakes.
With the next race scheduled for June 29 at the Red Bull Ring in Austria, Piastri heads into the event with growing confidence and a larger point buffer. Norris, meanwhile, will be focusing on regaining momentum and avoiding errors that could damage his hopes for the rest of the season.
The spotlight stays firmly on McLaren as both drivers push harder for every point in their ongoing title fight, making the remainder of the championship even more unpredictable.
