Lando Norris’ chances to win the Formula 1 drivers’ title this season have taken a big hit after a dramatic incident at the Canadian Grand Prix. On lap 67 of the race in Montreal, Norris collided with his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri while attempting an overtake.

The contact sent Norris into the pit wall and forced him to retire. He immediately admitted fault for the crash, calling it a clear driving mistake.
Former Haas boss Guenther Steiner, speaking on the Red Flags podcast, commented that such errors are costly when chasing a championship. He openly stated that Norris will not clinch the 2025 F1 crown if mistakes like this continue.
During the race, Piastri remarkably avoided serious damage and was able to finish fourth. That strong result allowed him to extend his lead in the championship.
After Canada, Piastri holds 198 points, while Norris drops to third in the standings with 176 points, now 22 behind his teammate. Reigning champion Max Verstappen, driving for Red Bull, sits in second position at 155 points.
Steiner, who values Norris highly, said that a racer aiming for the world title cannot afford such lapses in judgment and composure, especially in situations involving team battles.
McLaren now faces a key decision about its drivers as the title fight intensifies. Steiner believes management at the Woking-based team might soon have to direct Norris to support Piastri’s title bid.
While McLaren leads the constructors’ standings with 374 points, comfortably ahead of Mercedes (199 points) and Ferrari (183 points), the focus now may be to avoid further costly incidents between teammates. Steiner pointed out that the outcome could have been worse if Piastri’s car had suffered a puncture and both drivers had ended their races early.

As Formula 1 heads into the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring on June 29, McLaren will be watching its drivers closely. Team orders may become necessary in order to maintain their position at the top both in the drivers’ and constructors’ championships.
Meanwhile, rival teams like Red Bull and Mercedes are closing in, making every point even more valuable as the season enters a critical phase. Incidents like the Montreal crash can change the momentum of a championship run.
For Norris, the path to his first world title has become much more difficult. The spotlight is now on whether McLaren will prioritize Piastri’s campaign and if Norris can recover from this setback and regain his early-season form.
The upcoming races will be vital in shaping the outcome of the 2025 Formula 1 season. As McLaren seeks its first drivers’ title since 2008, how the team manages its talented lineup could prove decisive.
The pressure is high, with fans and pundits eager to see if Norris can bounce back or if the focus will shift completely to Piastri’s emerging title push.
