His teammates at Hendrick Motorsports, William Byron and Kyle Larson, have already led more than 750 laps each, clear front-runners in the field. Elliott, on the other hand, has led just 95 laps so far.
Even Alex Bowman, twelfth in points, has led more laps than Elliott, highlighting the gap he must close. One area where Elliott admits he is struggling is qualifying.
Both Byron, Larson, and Bowman have started from pole at least once this season, giving them an early advantage on race day. Elliott’s best starting spot was second at Martinsville, which led to one of his stronger outings, finishing fourth and leading 42 laps.
He points to the Michigan round this year as an example, noting how starting up front made a big difference in speed and competitiveness.
Elliott’s consistency this year has played an important role in his high standing, but he knows it is not enough. He is proud of how his team has turned bad days into reasonable finishes.
He says it is easy to give up when things are not going well, but they keep fighting for every point. This effort has helped keep his playoff hopes secure, yet he remains focused on the bigger challenge—getting his No. 9 Chevrolet back into Victory Lane.
With the season just past its halfway point, Elliott has his sights set on breaking the winless streak. This weekend, he returns to Pocono Raceway, a track where he last won in 2022.
He also competes in the Xfinity Series in addition to Cup, starting off strong by earning pole position in that support event. As the summer stretch continues, Elliott and his crew will aim to convert their solid runs into long-awaited victories.
Elliott’s commitment this season demonstrates the enduring challenges of maintaining performance across different series and conditions.
