Doornbos noted that Vettel would be two or three turns quicker every lap and that, when added up over the distance of a Grand Prix, these differences proved decisive. He identified that Piastri’s racing instincts and composure stand out in similar ways.
Looking closely at what defines champions, Doornbos cited his own experience driving alongside Vettel in a car test at Jerez. The data revealed that Vettel was three-tenths of a second per lap faster.
Oscar Piastri, who currently leads the McLaren points haul with 198 points to Norris’s 176, has shown a maturity and edge that impresses many within the paddock. Doornbos believes Piastri is well-placed to challenge for world championship titles in the near future.
He emphasized that racing data supports his assessment, with Piastri regularly getting the most out of the car, making few mistakes, and consistently beating his teammate in crucial moments.
On the other side, Norris remains a fan favourite and a multiple Grand Prix winner with six career victories. Yet, questions linger about whether he can turn those wins into a championship campaign.
McLaren currently leads the Constructors’ Championship with 374 points, putting both Norris and Piastri in a strong position for more wins as the season goes on. The next races will be a chance for Norris to close the gap to his teammate and prove that he can match the skills and instincts that Doornbos says define a true champion.
As discussions about talent, instinct, and raw speed continue throughout the paddock, their performance on track is sure to provide even more talking points for fans and analysts alike.
