After the race, Russell emphasized that Mercedes was โunder no illusionsโ about the carโs capabilities across a diverse range of tracks. โThis really suited the strengths of our car the same way as it did last year,โ he admitted.
The Canadian Grand Prix outcome was positive, but he stressed that similar performances are not guaranteed everywhere, especially at venues with different conditions and layouts. In 2024, this was the first time both Mercedes drivers stood together on the podium, highlighting how crucial it is for the team to capitalize on favorable weekends.
Their solid teamwork in Montreal delivered results when it mattered most, placing Mercedes on the second step of the Constructorsโ standings with 199 points, behind McLarenโs 374 and ahead of Ferrariโs 183.
The Montreal event was also marked by some controversy, as Red Bullโs protest against Russellโs win was rejected, and an incident between McLaren teammates Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri drew attention. The focus, however, stayed on Mercedesโ ability to deliver under the right circumstances, as both drivers managed to outperform rivals from Ferrari and Red Bull for the first time this season.
Russell, who has now established himself among Formula 1โs race winners, keeps his expectations realistic as the season continues. He expects more difficult weekends ahead as the calendar moves to tracks like the Red Bull Ring, Silverstone, and Spa-Francorchamps.
Consistency and adaptation will be key if Mercedes hopes to challenge for more wins. Next stops for the championship include the Austrian Grand Prix on June 29 and the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on July 6.
Fans will be watching to see if Mercedes can continue to respond well when the opportunities present themselves, despite the varied demands of the upcoming circuits.
