He also highlighted the launch of the Gen4 Formula E car in 18 months as a significant factor in his decision. “With everything I know about it, I’d be really happy and tempted to drive that car if I could,” Buemi remarked, showing clear interest.
The Gen4 car is set to debut at the end of 2026 and promises to be the fastest and most powerful Formula E vehicle yet. Early information suggests it could outperform current Formula 2 cars and approach Formula 1 levels.
The new car will feature increased power, four-wheel drive, larger tires, and more downforce. For Buemi, the challenge of racing such a car adds to his motivation to stay in the series.
A key point for Buemi is the need for schedule alignment between Formula E and WEC. The 2025/26 season offers assurance that races will not clash, except for the Berlin E-Prix and the Six Hours of São Paulo, which will be the last overlap for now.
Buemi explained, “People are not willing to have drivers that will have to miss races. And of course, I have to agree with that.”
While preparing for these changes, Buemi continues to serve as a Red Bull simulator driver. He works closely on upcoming Formula 1 power unit rule changes set for 2026.
Differences in lap times between F1 and Formula E are expected to narrow with new regulations in both series. Buemi hinted that Formula E’s Gen4 car could post lap times very close to F1, especially as 2026 F1 cars may be slower based on initial projections.
As both Formula E and Formula 1 head toward technical updates, teams and fans are eager to see how the performance gap will shift. Buemi said he looks forward to the changes and is keen to race Formula E’s next-generation car if schedules remain compatible.
