Monaco Date Shift Could Rescue Champion’s Formula E Future

Highlights
- Monaco E-Prix may move to May 1-2 to avoid WEC clash.
- Change responds to major Monaco event on original May dates.
- Potential date shift could enable Sebastien Buemi’s Formula E participation.
- Final approval awaits FIA and World Motor Sport Council meetings.
- Nyck de Vries less impacted, expected to stay with Mahindra Racing.
- Berlin E-Prix remains on May 8-9, maintaining back-to-back weekends.
Formula E could ease a key WEC clash with a proposed Monaco E-Prix date change to May 1–2. Berlin stays on May 8–9. FIA and Council approval is required.
The adjustment responds to a major non-sporting event in Monaco on the original May 15–16 slot. That date has already been filed with the FIA.
If ratified, the move most benefits Sebastien Buemi. It would cut expected absences and strengthen his case to remain with Envision Racing alongside Toyota’s WEC programme.

Under the initial calendar, Buemi could have missed up to four races due to Toyota obligations. As the 2016 Formula E champion, he remains central to Envision’s plans.
Envision and managing director Sylvain Filippi are open to keeping Buemi if only one clash remains. Toyota could cover a round with two drivers or a junior.
Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds outlines the process. The series submits revisions to the FIA, which then goes to the World Motor Sport Council for confirmation.
A decision is unlikely before September or October meetings. Until then, no official change will take effect.

Despite the move, the calendar remains back-to-back with the Berlin E-Prix on May 8–9. That operational load shapes logistics and spares planning.
Nyck de Vries is also affected but faces less pressure from Mahindra. The 2021 champion is expected to stay through the Gen4 era.
Overlaps may persist in July with Shanghai Formula E and Interlagos WEC. Buemi could repeat his 2025 approach by prioritising Envision for one weekend.
Reducing clashes strengthens grid continuity and competitive integrity. It also aligns with Formula E’s broader strategy to maintain star driver participation.
The final decision rests with the FIA and World Motor Sport Council. Teams continue scenario planning until confirmation arrives.
