IHRA Launches Bold New Focus on Drag Racing Growth

Highlights
- IHRA ends 2026 Nitro Drag Racing Series early
- Decision made to maintain quality, safety, and professionalism
- Other IHRA events continue as scheduled without interruption
- IHRA President Dustin Farthing emphasizes focus on grassroots racing
- Announcement officially made on July 9, 2026
- Organization aims to rebuild foundation for sustainable racing future
The International Hot Rod Association ended its remaining 2026 Nitro Drag Racing Series rounds, confirming the decision on July 9, 2026, after determining it could not guarantee required standards.
IHRA cites operational and safety demands as decisive factors. Management judged it preferable to halt the Nitro program rather than risk diluted procedures, presentation, or competitor welfare.
The change applies only to the Nitro Drag Racing Series. IHRA-owned facility events, weekly brackets, sportsman racing, Team Finals, and other competitions continue without modification.

President Dustin Farthing frames the call as a strategic reset to refocus on grassroots competition and member track investment, reiterating that finishing the schedule must not compromise integrity.
Farthing stresses the organisation’s roots in community racing and its duty to uphold professionalism. That stance aligns with sanctioning obligations on safety, track readiness, and event staffing.
Competitors retain multiple targets, including the IHRA World Championship Triple Crown, with active qualifiers sustaining progression for sportsman and bracket racers.
The broader drag calendar also stays busy, as regional showcases like PDRA North-South qualifying continue to supply competitive mileage and technical learning for teams.
IHRA advises racers and tracks to monitor series and venue communications for updates on entries, credits, and logistics, ensuring clarity while the association rebalances resources.
In competitive terms, halting Nitro removes short‑term headline events but protects the ecosystem. Concentrating spend and staff on local programs should stabilise participation and improve baseline standards.
The tone is appreciative rather than defensive, thanking racers, teams, sponsors, operators, and volunteers. The objective is a durable platform before any renewed national Nitro push.
