IHRA’s July 9 decision to cancel the remaining Outlaw Nitro Series events sidelined Mountain Motor Pro Stock again. Johnny Pluchino now fronts efforts to protect the class’s future and momentum.
The abrupt halt removes a perceived anchor series that had offered stability, prize money, and profile. Teams must rapidly address schedules, funding gaps, and visibility to sustain competitive cadence.
Pluchino’s pedigree underpins his influence. His uncle John Nobile won IHRA Pro Stock in 2004, his father John took the 2016 PDRA Extreme Pro Stock crown, and Johnny added PDRA titles in 2020 and 2022, plus NHRA’s 2024 Mountain Motor Pro Stock championship.

That lineage explains the commitment. The team has poured time, money, and development into a class he calls “amazing,” even as headwinds repeatedly interrupt growth.
Last season offered choice and conflict. MMPS entries could race in PDRA, NHRA’s Johnson’s Horsepowered Garage series, and IHRA. Pluchino ran all three while prioritizing his NHRA defense.
Weather compounded complexity. He reached IHRA semifinals at one round but departed early after rain delays clashed with prior commitments and longer-term objectives.
In 2024, the strategy shifted. The new IHRA package promised serious purses, pro-level billing, and hospitality, providing a focal point for teams and sponsors.
Performance met the brief. Pluchino won the first two races and made two additional semifinals, building a 12-2 round record. He fought Long Island rival John Montecalvo for the points lead.
IHRA trimmed three events in late June, which appeared a pragmatic reset. Full cancellation days later changed optimism to frustration, echoing themes from IHRA Triple Crown discussions.
The immediate loss was competitive and financial. Prize structures had underpinned budgets, while partners had aligned around a championship pursuit that suddenly vanished.
On-track form sharpened the sting. The Kaase-powered Mustang, backed by Ross Environmental Services, was peaking. Event fields exceeded 20 entries, reinforcing the class’s show value.
Cohesion now becomes decisive. Fragmented calendars and splintered priorities have previously dulled impact. Governance clarity and scheduling discipline are crucial to rebuild trust and cadence.
That mirrors broader sanctioning dynamics, including ongoing PDRA leadership discussions that shape opportunities and alignment for Pro Stock stakeholders.
There are positives. Cars remain in team hands, crews are intact, and the product is compelling. The target is simple: arrive with depth, deliver clean shows, and retain audience confidence.
An immediate shop window is set. Mountain Motor Pro Stock will run August 1 at the 49th Cornwell Quality Tools Night Under Fire in Norwalk, alongside NHRA stars Doug Kalitta and Ron Capps.
The Norwalk stage carries proven pull, as underlined by recent NHRA Pro Mod coverage from the venue. This time, FloRacing will stream MMPS worldwide for the first time.
Pluchino thanked Summit Motorsports Park and Ross Environmental Services for enabling the broadcast and profile. The crowd and platform should provide a timely performance benchmark.
The goal is proof of concept. Organizers want MMPS to headline, not fill gaps, while fundraising and schedule-building continue for the remainder of the season and into 2027.
Success metrics are clear. Full 16-plus car fields, consistent execution, and close racing. Meet those, and confidence, sponsorship, and calendar traction should follow naturally.
