INDYCAR Announces Tough Penalties for ‘500’ Post-Qualifying Violations

Highlights

  • Cars No. 4 and 24 failed post-qualifying technical inspections.
  • Illegal EMS cover modifications led to disqualification of qualifying results.
  • Both cars moved to rear; car No. 4 lost three qualifying points.
  • Pit stall selections forfeited; crews pick after all other teams.
  • Teams may appeal penalties via the official INDYCAR review process.
  • Indianapolis 500 set for May 24 with adjusted starting grid.

INDYCAR penalizes the No. 4 A.J. Foyt Enterprises and No. 24 Dreyer & Reinbold Racing entries after post-qualifying checks for the Indianapolis 500, disallowing their times and sending both to the back.

Officials cite illegal changes to Dallara‑supplied Energy Management System covers and their A‑arm mounting points, including unapproved hardware. The rules require those parts, hardware, and helicopter tape to remain exactly as supplied.

The field’s tail order resets by entrant points, and car No. 4 receives an extra sanction of three lost qualifying points.

Both cars are disqualified from qualifying and moved to the rear after illegal EMS cover modifications.

Both teams also forfeit pit stall selections. Their crews will choose boxes only after the rest of the grid, limiting strategic flexibility on cautions and undercuts.

Points reallocation follows. Car Nos. 9 and 76 gain 10th and 11th qualifying points, while No. 75 earns none because it did not compete in the Top 12 session.

Car No. 4 is additionally docked three Indianapolis 500 qualifying points.

INDYCAR’s review and appeal pathway remains available. Any team may present evidence or arguments for reconsideration under the NTT INDYCAR SERIES rulebook.

The sanctions reinforce regulatory consistency at marquee events. They also shape race-day risk management, given compromised grid spots and constrained pit positioning for the penalized entries.

Pit stall selections for cars 4 and 24 are forfeited; their boxes are chosen only after all others.

Reigning winner Alex Palou recently secured his second Indianapolis 500 pole, underscoring a tight competitive picture. With the 110th Running on May 24, technical compliance stays non‑negotiable.
