Formula 1 and the FIA are exploring inserting an extra race this year after April cancellations in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. Both venues remain under consideration to return if conditions allow.
The cancellations follow heightened Middle East tensions, which rendered April events unsafe. Rescheduling looked unlikely, yet recent comments from Stefano Domenicali reopened the door to recovering at least one lost round.
The weekend of October 2-4, between Azerbaijan and Singapore, is under review. Bahrain is favored, largely because championship freight already sits in the country, simplifying logistics and minimizing additional shipping.

Saudi Arabia continues to press for reinstatement. One modeled option adds Jeddah between Qatar and Abu Dhabi, creating a late-season quadruple-header and shifting Abu Dhabi back one week.
That approach is logistically feasible but punishing for personnel after an intense campaign. Contractual requirements that Abu Dhabi closes the season limit scope to alter dates or sequence.
Fan commitments add risk. Many supporters already hold tickets and travel for Abu Dhabi’s original weekend, increasing the disruption and potential costs of any date change.
Security conditions remain the decisive variable. A final call is unlikely before mid-August, allowing time to assess the regional situation and align stakeholders on a practical, safe solution.
Financial pressure is considerable. Bahrain and Saudi Arabia have already paid fees estimated at about £100 million, despite the cancellations, incentivizing efforts to recover at least one event.
If the conflict escalates, further Middle East rounds could be threatened. Qatar and Abu Dhabi would then be at risk, potentially trimming the calendar to 20 races and ending with Las Vegas.
Alternative venues surface as contingencies. Silverstone expresses interest in a late-season date, though European weather is a major deterrent. Turkey also appears viable between Azerbaijan and Singapore, but hurdles remain.
Turkey is set to return full-time next season under a five-year contract through 2031, strengthening its longer-term prospects even if a 2024 standby proves impractical.
Operationally, the post-summer run already packs 11 races into 16 weekends. Any addition tightens freight turnarounds, compresses factory updates, and stretches travel rotations across garages, trackside engineering, and hospitality.
