Allan McNish has taken on Audi’s Formula 1 racing director role, reversing his previous stance on management and making his first appearance on the pit wall in Miami last month.

The appointment formalizes a structure in which McNish supports team principal Mattia Binotto, distributing responsibilities after Jonathan Wheatley stepped down earlier this year.

McNish’s credentials are clear. A three-time Le Mans winner and 2013 World Endurance Champion, he later led Audi’s Formula E team to a title after becoming team principal four years post-retirement.

He remained in post until Audi exited Formula E in 2021, maintaining close involvement as the brand ramped up its F1 project.

In F1, McNish oversees race operations during grands prix and continues to lead Audi’s driver development program, linking trackside execution with longer-term talent planning.

He frames the move as a “no-brainer,” noting his continuous work across Audi’s motorsport programs and a change in perspective since pledging to avoid management in 2013.

The split with Binotto is designed to streamline decision-making. McNish handles live operations, while Binotto retains overall leadership amid the project’s expanding workload.

Miami was treated as a learning exercise, with McNish focusing on interfaces between departments and the cadence of F1 weekends to refine processes.

His endurance and Formula E background offers relevant strengths: operational discipline, systems integration, and energy management, all central to a modern F1 programme.

He described Miami as a “learning race” that clarified how the team fits together.

With the structure now clearer, Audi’s priority is execution. That means refining race processes, maturing the driver pathway, and building consistency as preparation intensifies for forthcoming seasons.
