Joe Morrison returns to Nitro Funny Car competition at the inaugural NHRA Potomac Nationals at Maryland International Raceway, qualifying 16th and exiting in round one but signalling clear progress.
Running the Herzhauser Funny Car, Morrison and crew chief Jimbo pursued a conservative plan given limited backing, targeting minimal qualifying laps to control parts risk and gather precise data.
One Saturday morning pass proved sufficient to make the 16-car field, despite tire smoke, and provided baseline information for race day adjustments.

He described Potomac as his third outing in the Herzhauser Funny Car this season and said he felt increasingly settled, crediting preparation and communication for a straightforward weekend.
The team focused on peak execution against top seed Jack Beckman, anticipating a narrow operating window and a staging routine critical to any upset.
Morrison launched with the better reaction, but Beckman overhauled him before 330 feet and stopped the clocks at 5.207 seconds, the event’s second-quickest run.
Accepting the pace deficit, Morrison lifted near the stripe to protect equipment, prioritising budget preservation and the longer-term programme.

Jimbo’s tune-up delivered repeatable, competitive behaviour from A to B, enabling the driver to concentrate on fundamentals rather than survival.
Morrison invested in outreach, attending Thursday’s FanFest run by St. Mary’s County, engaging fans alongside nearly two dozen NHRA pros, with live music and a car show boosting interest.
That momentum translated to race day, where attendance appeared strong and atmosphere lively, offering sponsors and teams valuable exposure.
Elsewhere, standouts such as Pruett and Hagan underlined the event’s competitive depth, setting benchmarks Morrison now chases.
Notably, Antron Brown’s early exit further illustrated how quickly form can swing across a compressed qualifying programme.
Morrison closed the weekend encouraged, balancing Right2Breathe commitments with racing, and evaluating when to return as the schedule advances.
The objective is incremental gains and regular race-day appearances, building on Potomac learnings with a sustainable, competitive Funny Car programme.
