George Russell Names Red Bull F1’s Team To Beat, Kimi Antonelli Flags Warning

Highlights

  • George Russell calls Red Bull “the team to beat” in F1
  • Red Bull showed dominance in Baku, Malaysia, and Singapore races
  • Mercedes’ W17 upgrade struggled on Malaysia’s rough Sepang circuit
  • Antonelli tested Mercedes upgrade in Singapore, noting narrow operating window
  • Mercedes aims to refine upgrades at upcoming United States Grand Prix
  • Mercedes sees potential but still behind Red Bull’s current pace

George Russell labels Red Bull the team to beat after the Asian swing, citing decisive pace in Baku, Malaysia, and Singapore that established a clear performance benchmark for the field.

In Baku, Max Verstappen finished 0.196s behind Russell, then won convincingly in Malaysia and Singapore, underlining Red Bull’s speed across contrasting layouts and tyre demands.

Both teams introduced major upgrades. Red Bull’s final big RB22 package arrived in Baku and delivered immediate lap-time, improving traction and efficiency without obvious setup compromises.

Mercedes rolled out its W17 update in Malaysia but struggled at Sepang’s abrasive surface, masking correlation and preventing clear validation of the aerodynamic and mechanical changes.

In Singapore, Russell ran the older specification while Kimi Antonelli trialed the upgrade, gathering comparison data. Early findings indicate potential, but within a narrow operating window highly sensitive to inputs.

“Right now they are the team to beat,” Russell says.

Russell downplays luck factors such as virtual safety car timing. He insists Mercedes must close the outright deficit to Red Bull, as explored in Russell’s title chances analysis.

Antonelli says wind-tunnel and simulation numbers look encouraging, yet the car’s on-track behavior varies, requiring driver adaptation and engineering tweaks to widen the window and stabilize entry and braking balance.

Antonelli: the W17 upgrade works best in a narrow window and is highly sensitive to driving inputs.

The United States Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas offers Mercedes more learning time. With three practice sessions, the team plans structured experiments to refine setups, detailed in Antonelli’s US GP preparation feature.

A strong COTA result could be decisive for Antonelli’s title bid, with the possibility of clinching the championship if results align.

Mercedes targets COTA to validate and tune the W17 upgrade package.

Singapore offered Mercedes a clearer baseline and greater confidence to iterate. Recent weekends also suggest opportunities remain for Russell, examined in his missed win analysis during this run.

Within cost-cap limits and ATR constraints, Mercedes must convert simulation gains into a broader, more forgiving operating window to challenge Red Bull consistently across changing conditions.
