Max Verstappen and Valentino Rossi go head to head on Saturday at Portimao, the GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup finale, racing in the Pro class on a 61-car grid.

The crossover pits a current Formula 1 benchmark against a MotoGP great, with Balance of Performance rules ensuring hardware parity becomes a strategic, execution-led contest in Portugal.

The finale at Portimao arrives with both drivers relatively new as direct GT3 rivals, yet backed by experienced teams and well-understood platforms.

Verstappen drives a Mercedes-AMG GT3 EVO run by Mercedes-AMG Team Verstappen Racing with 2 Seas Motorsport support, using the naturally aspirated 6.3-litre M159 V8.

The unit produces around 550 horsepower before BoP adjustments, allied to a front-mid layout, rear-wheel drive, and a six-speed sequential gearbox. BoP sets weight near 1,285 kilograms.

Rossi counters with the No. 46 BMW M4 GT3 EVO from Team WRT, powered by the 3.0-litre twin-turbo P58 straight-six. Output reaches up to 590 horsepower before BoP reductions.

The BMW uses a six-speed Xtrac transmission, with a 2,917mm wheelbase and an overall length of 5,020mm including splitter and rear wing. Brakes are 390mm front and 380mm rear.

Since the EVO’s arrival, BMW’s M4 GT3 platform has prioritized reliability, cost control, and approachable handling, contributing to more than 70 victories, including Spa 24 Hours in 2023 and the 2022 DTM title.

BoP trims raw performance differences, turning stint management, traffic handling, and pit execution into decisive factors at Portimao.

Both cars share front-engine, rear-drive architecture, sequential gearboxes, and 390mm front discs. The Mercedes brings a deeper V8 rumble, while the BMW’s turbo six delivers a sharper, higher note.

With performance converged by BoP, the competitive edge will likely come from consistency on long runs and how effectively each crew adapts as track conditions evolve.

Verstappen’s GT3 résumé is short yet striking. He won on debut at Nürburgring NLS9 in 2025, sharing a Ferrari 296 GT3 with Chris Lulham during his GT return.

He then led the 2026 Nürburgring 24 Hours in the No. 3 Mercedes before a late driveshaft failure. The sister No. 80 car won, underlining the marque’s endurance strength.

“Max Verstappen is going to be a huge problem because the bloke is just so incredibly fast,” Rossi admits of the challenge ahead.

Rossi, 47, brings broader GT3 mileage. Since 2022 he has raced with Team WRT, starting in Audis and switching to BMW from 2023, building familiarity with the M4 platform.

He claimed three consecutive Misano Sprint wins from 2023 to 2025 and added LMGT3 podiums in the World Endurance Championship, showing steady development in multi-class traffic.

Verstappen’s peak speed meets Rossi’s accrued GT craft, creating a compelling form guide for the Pro-class decider.

Their contrasting routes into GT3 sharpen the focus on execution. Driver changes, traffic discipline, and pit windows will likely decide any marginal on-track advantage.

Interest in Verstappen’s GT trajectory continues to build, with the build-up to Portimao and ongoing plans for GT3 racing shaping expectations for his dual-program future.

With BoP setting the baseline, Saturday’s contest should hinge on consistency, adaptability, and how well each crew translates their drivers’ strengths into stint-long performance.
