Max Verstappen Battles Team Penalty to Secure Top 10 Finish at GT Portimao

Highlights

  • Verstappen Racing faced a penalty after contact during safety car
  • Ben Barnicoat advanced from 13th to 8th in opening stint
  • Chris Lulham moved car up to 6th before penalty
  • Max Verstappen recovered from 24th to finish in top 10
  • #17 Mercedes won; #80 and #2 Porsche completed podium

Max Verstappen rescues a top 10 for Verstappen Racing at the GT World Challenge in Portimão after a caution-era penalty, as #17 Mercedes wins from #80 and #2 Porsches.

The #3 Mercedes-AMG GT3 shows podium pace before an error during neutralisation triggers a drive-through, flipping track position and strategy.

Ben Barnicoat opens with a measured stint, climbing from 13th to eighth and keeping the leaders within reach.

Barnicoat advances from 13th to eighth in the opening stint.

Chris Lulham then advances to sixth, chipping away at Ralf Aron’s #17 Mercedes and stabilising the gap through the race’s first half.

Drive-through penalty for contact under safety car drops #3 from P6 to P24.

The pivotal moment comes as a full-course yellow becomes a safety car. Lulham attempts a move on the #48 Mercedes, causes contact, and the car spins.

Overtaking is prohibited under FCY and safety car procedures, so stewards issue a drive-through. Lulham serves it before handing to Verstappen.

Verstappen starts his final stint 24th. His pace immediately matches the leaders, and a later safety car compresses the field, promoting him to 19th for the restart.

From there he carves through traffic. With 15 minutes remaining he sits 15th, three seconds behind Arthur Leclerc’s #50 Ferrari in 10th, then executes a decisive multi-car pass to ninth.

Verstappen gains 15 places in the final stint to finish ninth.

That recovery limits penalty damage and banks points. The pace profile suggests a podium was possible without the error, underlining a missed pre-event goal for the programme.

Up front, Aron controls the race for the #17 Mercedes. The #80 Porsche secures second, while the #2 Porsche completes the podium after a late position shuffle.

Race won by #17 Mercedes; #80 and #2 Porsches complete the podium.

Operationally, the lesson is clear: discipline during neutralisations protects results. The team’s baseline speed, evident across all stints, should carry into subsequent Portimão running.

Verstappen’s closing stint also provides setup direction and tyre management references, complementing Friday assessments and adding context to his adaptation outside single-seaters.
