Piedmont Dragway, the eighth-mile venue near Greensboro, has been bought by Greg Loflin and Terry Ferrell. The deal closed Thursday. Racer Bob Harris will manage operations before a 2027 reopening.
The track has anchored doorslammer racing since 1957 and carries significant regional weight. The owners target April or May 2027, aligning the restart with Piedmont’s 70th anniversary season.
Loflin is a familiar face, having raced in the Big Dog ranks. He lives 45 minutes away and operates TKM, Mr. RPM, and Loflin Fabrication from a 130,000-square-foot manufacturing base.

Harris, whose son Jason has multiple Big Dog Shootout wins, will run day-to-day operations. He stressed the effort behind the deal and the need to preserve regular racing at Piedmont.
Operationally, Harris will be supported by longtime figure Rick Moore, a racer and former technical director. Liz Vance steps in as acting general manager, consolidating continuity during the renovation period.
The first project phase targets surface and safety: new concrete, walls, and extensive asphalt paving. Planned upgrades also include lighting, bleachers, a refreshed PA, updated timing, and a second entrance.

Retaining the tower, concession stand, and recently updated restrooms limits disruption and cost, while modernizing core performance areas that influence safety, consistency, and racer confidence over an eighth-mile run.
The overhaul underpins Piedmont’s doorslammer identity, notably the Big Dog Shootout. A refreshed surface and systems should better serve PDRA-style racers and similar PDRA Pro heads-up entries.
The team also eyes broader reach. Upgrades could attract touring groups and the wider NHRA community, while supporting regional programs, from Quick 32-style fields to evolving small-tire programs.
Communication will ramp up as construction progresses. The owners plan regular updates on the 2027 schedule, with further detail on event formats once timelines and capital projects firm up.
