Chaz Mostert Triumphs in Thrilling Wet Supercars Gold Coast Race

Highlights

  • Chaz Mostert won Supercars Gold Coast opener in Toyota spare car
  • Mostert led from lap one, finishing 27 seconds ahead
  • David Reynolds climbed from 14th to finish second
  • Matt Payne penalized five seconds, dropped from second to third
  • Wet conditions impacted race strategy and tyre pressure choices
  • Next Supercars race scheduled for Sunday at Gold Coast event

Chaz Mostert dominates the Supercars Gold Coast opener for Walkinshaw TWG Racing and Toyota, mastering heavy rain to win by 27 seconds.

He does it in the team’s spare Toyota, a chassis that ran as a Ford Mustang last year. He qualifies second in the Shootout and controls the race once it goes green.

The start unfolds behind the Safety Car for three laps as rain intensifies. Polesitter Broc Feeney leads initially but struggles when released, likely hurt by tyre pressures.

Mostert overtakes Feeney at the end of the first green-flag lap and gaps the field by more than a second per lap, immediately dictating the pace.

Feeney’s Triple Eight crew responds on lap 21 with fresh wets and revised pressures. Mostert stops slightly earlier than planned to avoid traffic from early stoppers.

The undercut threat never materialises. After rejoining, Mostert rebuilds the gap, even while saving fuel late, and seals a third straight Gold Coast victory.

Mostert wins by 27 seconds in a rain‑hit Gold Coast opener.

Third consecutive Gold Coast victory for Mostert and Walkinshaw TWG.

Behind him, Matt Payne converts fifth on the grid into on‑road second. A five‑second penalty for a driving infringement drops him to third at the flag.

Payne’s five‑second penalty demotes him from P2 to P3.

David Reynolds executes the day’s standout climb. An early stop on lap nine gives him clear air, underpinning a surge from 14th to second with resolute late‑race defence.

Reynolds charges from P14 to P2 with an early pit stop strategy.

Anton De Pasquale maintains solid form, turning third on the grid into fourth. Andre Heimgartner follows in fifth for Brad Jones Racing, continuing the squad’s recent momentum.

The Mustang contingent is prominent. Will Brown finishes sixth, ahead of Brodie Kostecki in seventh, amid ongoing scrutiny of Bathurst parity and wet‑weather setup choices.

Cameron Waters takes eighth, with Feeney slipping to ninth after the early struggles. Jack Le Brocq endures penalties and issues, slumping to 22nd.

Thomas Randle’s troubled Tickford run and a long stop consign him to 23rd. Kai Allen finishes last after on‑the‑fly alternator repairs.

Strategy is decisive in the deluge. Tyre pressures, pit timing, and traffic management define outcomes, much as they did at the Bathurst 1000 earlier this month.

Race control’s early Safety Car helps stabilise conditions, but execution remains with teams and drivers. Walkinshaw Toyota looks operationally sharp, while rivals seek overnight gains.

The second Gold Coast race on Sunday offers a reset. Expect conservative pressures early, then aggressive calls as the track evolves—judgement calls akin to recent Racing Bulls driver decisions in F1.
