Ron Capps wins the Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge at the DENSO NHRA Sonoma Nationals, defeating Alexis DeJoria and Jack Beckman to bank bonus points and strengthen his Funny Car title bid.

Staged within the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series, the Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge awards vital bonus points. Dean “Guido” Antonelli’s tune-up underpins Capps’ weekend consistency at a packed Sonoma Raceway.

The semi-final reprises his Norwalk, Ohio match-up. Capps gains the launch advantage and clocks 3.941 seconds at 329.26 mph as DeJoria smokes the tires.

In the final, Capps and Beckman leave almost together. Beckman leads at 330 feet before both encounter tire smoke, forcing a delicate pedal and steering management fight to stay straight.

Capps gathers the car, avoids the wall and centerline, and edges ahead to the stripe. The victory seals his first Challenge success of the year and sustains his points momentum.

He stresses the group remains short of peak performance. Even so, the NAPA Auto Care team leads the standings and owns three Wally trophies this season.

“We don’t feel like we’re at our best right now, but we’re leading the points and have already won three Wallys.” — Ron Capps

He underlines the strategic value of Challenge bonus points, noting titles can hinge on such margins. The Sonoma win strengthens his buffer heading into eliminations.

Bonus points from the Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge can decide championships.

Capps cites sprint cars, dirt late models, and midgets as useful preparation. That breadth helps when a 12,000-horsepower Funny Car steps out and traction disappears.

Eliminations start Sunday at 11 a.m. Capps qualifies fourth courtesy of a 3.900 at 330.07 mph on Friday night, drawing Austin Prock in a compelling first-round pairing.
