Briatore Reveals Why F1 Teams Are Now Worth $10 Billion

Highlights
- F1 teams’ valuations could reach $10 billion soon, says Briatore.
- Otro Capital’s 24% Alpine stake is currently up for sale.
- Renault valued Alpine around $3.5 billion, about half its worth.
- Renault holds veto rights on Otro stake sale until September.
- Finance experts predict team valuations will keep rising for years.
Flavio Briatore says Formula 1 team valuations remain on an upward curve. He projects figures approaching $10 billion within four years, driven by investor demand and the scarcity of entries.
Speaking on The Race Business’ In Conversation With… series, he cited the attempted sale of Otro Capital’s 24% Alpine stake. For him, it is the latest market barometer.
The contrast with the 1990s is stark. Briatore recalled exiting Benetton at an $80 million valuation. He now frames leading teams in the $3.5–4 billion bracket.

Finance specialists he consults expect further appreciation. Asked if values had peaked, Briatore quipped he would already have sold if he owned a team outright.
Otro Capital purchased 24% of Alpine for €200 million in June 2023. The group includes athletes Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Rory McIlroy, and Anthony Joshua, and now seeks an exit.
Renault blocked a prospective sale to Mercedes in late May 2026. It retains veto rights on any transfer until September, with CEO Francois Provost describing the partnership as “not successful.”
Forbes valued Alpine at about $2.45 billion. Briatore argues nearer $3.2–3.5 billion, implying Alpine accounts for 40–50% of Renault’s estimated $8.3 billion market value.

He doubts any buyer pays a premium for a minority without the majority shareholder’s alignment. “I never see somebody spend 600 million to buy a minority,” Briatore said.
Renault remains in talks, and Briatore expects limited operational disruption. He also discussed Alpine’s direction alongside Fernando Alonso in a separate conversation about leadership and identity within the project.
Rising valuations mirror Formula 1’s commercial momentum and investor appetite. Recent analysis around Williams underscores the trend, while debate over a 12th team shows supply remains tightly constrained.
