Arrow McLaren Gears Up for Tough Battle at Portland This Sunday

Christian Lundgaard faces a recovery drive after qualifying last for Sunday’s OnlyBulls Grand Prix of Portland at Portland International Raceway, despite outstanding form on permanent road courses.

The No. 7 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet stops in Q1 with cascading faults: a frozen dash, failed re-cycle, non-start, then hybrid shutdown. “It was a lot of bad luck,” he says.

The setback jars an elite record. Lundgaard leads with 185 points on four road courses, winning at IMS Road Course and Road America, and finishing second at Barber and Mid-Ohio.

Arrow McLaren’s road-course package delivers three wins from four this year, yet Portland pace proves elusive. Mid-Ohio underlined the baseline when Lundgaard and Pato O’Ward locked out the front row.

O’Ward starts 17th, his worst this season, with Nolan Siegel 16th. The attempt to reach Q2 on one set of Firestone alternates misfires. Balance seems acceptable; outright speed is missing.

Last year, Lundgaard and O’Ward qualified first and second before a six-place grid penalty dropped Lundgaard from pole to seventh. The regulatory sting remains relevant amid Arrow McLaren’s Portland reset.

Dale Coyne Racing overachieves. Romain Grosjean rebounds from muted practice to start 10th, and Dennis Hauger lines up ninth after limited running. Grosjean expends two alternate sets in Q1.

Marcus Ericsson adds a human touch with a Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital livery. Patient artwork appears on the rear wing, including seven-year-old Chloe Creger’s designs. He qualifies fourth.

David Malukas manages a wrist flare-up after July’s Nashville crash, compounded by a February mountain-bike injury. He qualifies ninth but starts 15th after an unapproved engine change penalty.

He sits second in points, 83 behind leader Alex Palou, who starts second. Rinus VeeKay and Kyffin Simpson line up fifth and sixth, respectively.

Andretti Global’s Will Power starts third in the No. 26 TWG AI Honda. This is his first Portland start with the team, after last year’s Penske win from third.

Andretti seeks its first Portland victory but fields three in the top seven, with Ericsson fourth and Kyle Kirkwood seventh. Louis Foster starts 12th, and Graham Rahal is eighth.

A demanding 110-lap race starts at 4 p.m. ET on FOX and INDYCAR Radio. Evolving track conditions and tire usage should reward clean execution and flexible strategy.
